‘I was told to snub Chelsea and stay at Manchester United – I should have listened’
Under Sir Alex Ferguson, relatively few players left Manchester United to play for a rival team. Players rarely left for other reasons.
In the midst of their moves to European rivals Real Madrid, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo both moved for another nation; Carlos Tevez, on the other hand, is most known for that notorious cross-city switch in 2009. That short list also includes Juan Sebastian Veron.
He was one of Roman Abramovich’s first signings as club owner in 2003 when he left for Chelsea. The Argentine decided to leave Old Trafford after spending just two happy years there. After winning the Premier League title, he left the team after making 82 appearances and scoring 11 goals. Veron arrived at Old Trafford for £28.1 million, setting a British transfer record when he signed Manchester United.Sir Alex Ferguson said, “I think I’ve always searched for this,” when Veron was unveiled. “I never imagined that I would pay this much for a football player.
“You’ve witnessed the unimaginable escalation, but these days, it’s a club issue, and the players have no choice in the values applied to them. I believe that he is entering his prime years of play, and we will reap the rewards of that. He is an incredible football player of the highest caliber with a useful game concept.”
Veron looked up to Sir Alex, as did all United players. Speaking in 2021, the midfield player praised the great guy and explained how his managerial approach maintained the highest standards.
“He was so demanding with everybody,” Veron remarked. It was obvious that you would need to search elsewhere if you were unable to keep up. He was always honest with me, but more importantly, he supported me right away, which I greatly valued.
I wаsn’t аlwаys аble tо prоvide him with everything he wаnted frоm me аt times. He hаd it in certаin gаmes but nоt in оthers, аnd cоnsistency is а must fоr а greаt plаyer. аt оld Trаffоrd, I wаs unаble tо deliver it.”
Veron struggled to fit in at United and finished his rookie season with just five goals in 40 games. Prior to the match, doubts were beginning to surface regarding his transfer fee, and an article suggested that teammates had confronted Veron about his subpar performances during a Champions League semifinal loss to Bayer Leverkusen.Veron was aware that he wasn’t at full tilt, though. He acknowledged that events occurring off the football field affected his performance on it.
He described the adjustment his family had to make to life in England as “a big change of culture.”
“We had enjoyed our time in Italy, but the residents of Manchester made it easier for us to adapt. The people at the club and on the street were the greatest thing. Our home was in Hale.
We loved that it was peaceful and that a tiny forest was close by. Roy Keane, who lived close by, was a top player and captain in a group with high standards.
“There were Italian and Spanish-speaking folks in the changing area. Laurent Blanc also knew Italian, as did Mikael Silvestre. Spanish-speaking Quinton Fortune would arrive, as would Diego Forlan. And El Mister Ferguson attempted to communicate in Spanish! Everybody at Carrington always had a Spanish word for me.”
“The language barrier was a problem for me,” Veron continued, “but I had very good relationships with my teammates.” Having said that, I think it affected my social life away from the club. I’ve never enjoyed studying, therefore that was my problem!
“Unfortunately, United gave me an English teacher, but I only attended a few lessons before quitting. Perhaps because I was so young, I placed all of my money on the football team and undervalued the importance of personality off the field. I now realize that it would have been beneficial to interact socially with a few of my teammates.
On the other hand, everyone can grasp the single language of football. Veron frequently played with Paul Scholes, a player he really respected.
It was a joy to work out and spend time with everyone of them. However, Veron reportedly remarked, “If I had to choose just one, it would be Scholes.” “He was the whole deal. He was a great ball-recovery, attacking, and shooting player. He was also very intelligent and a great game reader. He was a wealthy man.
