Dark Eagle is the US Army’s name for its long-range hypersonic weapon, or LRHW. The system is built around a common hypersonic glide body, a vehicle developed jointly with the US Navy. Hypersonic generally refers to speeds above Mach 5, more than five times the speed of sound. The Army says Dark Eagle is designed to operate at speeds exceeding Mach 5.
But speed alone isn’t what makes the system important. The bigger issue is the combination of speed and maneuverability. A traditional ballistic trajectory can be predicted to a certain extent because the missile follows a largely predictable path. A hypersonic glide vehicle is different.
After its boost phase, the glide body travels through the atmosphere at extreme speed while being capable of maneuvering. That can make defending against it significantly more complicated. It creates a race between two technologies. The attacker wants to make the weapon faster, more maneuverable, and harder to detect.
The defender wants better sensors, better tracking, and faster interceptors. Whoever wins that race could gain an enormous advantage. Now we get to the real reason this weapon has attracted so much attention. China.
For years, the United States and China have been building military capabilities around the possibility of a future conflict in the Indo-Pacific. Geography matters.
