Exciting Addition to Inter Miami: USMNT Star and Two-Time MLS Cup Winner Joins Forces with Lionel Messi

Inter Miami has signed two-time MLS Cup winner Julian Gressel, giving Lionel Messi and Co. even more ammunition as they chase league silverware this year.

Gressel, a 30-year-old midfielder and defender, most recently played for the Columbus Crew, as he came off the bench for their 2-1 championship win over LAFC last month.

Now, as announced by the club, Miami will be adding Gressel’s postseason pedigree to its ranks through the 2026 season, with an option for 2027.

‘I’m thrilled to be joining such an ambitious organization as Inter Miami for this new chapter in my career,’ he said in a press release. ‘I’m ready to get to work and use my experience in this league to help my new teammates and this great club achieve its dream of winning more titles.’

Gressel will reunite with Miami coach Tata Martino, who he previously worked with at Atlanta United. The pair lifted the 2018 MLS Cup together there.

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are the oddsmakers’ favorites to win MLS Cup in 2024

Miami announced the signing of the versatile Gressel on Tuesday afternoon on its club website

The German-born player has also made six appearances for the US men’s national team.

For Miami, the reported signing continues a big offseason which has already seen the club land former Barcelona and Liverpool striker (and once-again Messi teammate) Luis Suarez.

Suarez will turn 37 later this month but was named the player of the season in the Brazilian league as he scored 17 goals for Gremio.

The Uruguayan will of course also team up with Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba in South Florida, whom he played with at Barcelona as well.

The Herons also signed a trio of talented young South Americans over the summer in Tomas Aviles (19 years old), Facundo Farias (20), and Diego Gomez (20).

With all of that firepower, Miami has been deemed massive favorites by the bookmakers to win the 2024 MLS Cup, with +200 odds.

Luis Suarez will soon turn 37 but won the Brazilian league’s golden ball award last season

Last year’s runners-up, LAFC, are well behind in second at +800 while the Crew and FC Cincinnati are joint-third at +1200.

The Herons failed to make the postseason after the summer arrivals of Messi, Busquets and Alba, as the team was languishing in last place of the Eastern Conference when they joined.

However, the club did win its first silverware in the Leagues Cup, beating Nashville in the final.

Miami will kick off the new MLS season on February 21 vs. Real Salt Lake.
