Real Madrid midfielder was ‘one millimetre’ away from a serious two-month injury in 4-0 win vs Girona

Real Madrid took on Girona yesterday in a top-of-the-table clash that could potentially determine the eventual winner of La Liga this season. While everyone presumed it would be a tasty end-to-end affair, Carlo Ancelotti’s side proved why they are the biggest footballing institution of all time.

Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham were the headline feature in what turned out to be a 4- 0 win for Los Blancos, with the former scoring one and essentially creating the other three goals, while the latter dunked two on Girona’s head.

Bellingham seemed to have injured himself in the first half itself after slipping inside the box, but continued playing. He even scored his second goal of the game while evidently limping, and had to be subbed off right after.

The Englishman is set to miss two-three weeks worth of football, and will return to action against RB Leipzig for the second leg in the Champions League round of 16.

According to AS, though, Bellingham avoided a rather serious injury by just ‘one millimetre’ yesterday. Had he twisted his ankle a little more, the ligaments of the tibiofibular joint would have been impacted. This would have potentially ruled him out for two months.

It’s the same injury Vinicius Jr suffered in 2019 against Ajax that sidelined him for exactly two months. He had left the pitch in tears during the first-half, and said, “I spent six months with fear; when it was cold, it hurt without doing anything” about it.

Real Madrid’s next obstacle will be RB Leipzig in the Champions League round of 16 first leg this Tuesday. They will be without Bellingham, Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao, David Alaba, and Thibaut Courtois for the game, but will be confident about continuing their momentum.
