“11 Years Of Higher Education Schooling, 3 Degrees & 3 Continents Later, Here I Am”- Lady Says After Bagging PHD Degree

Dr. Chioma Onwuchekwa is excited about her new achievements at the moment.

Dr. Chioma just bagged her PhD in Environmental Sciences-Chemistry.

She captioned her career moments by saying“11 years of higher Education schooling, 3 Degrees and 3 continents later, here I am”.

She went further to outline all the degrees she has received,2011- BSc Industrial Chemistry2014-MSc Energy & Environmental Mgt2022-PhD Environmental Sciences-Chemistry, saying most especially her master’s program was not an easy journey.

2011- BSc Industrial Chemistry2014-MSc Energy & Environmental Mgt2022-PhD Environmental Sciences-Chemistry.

Here’s a little back story- I started my PhD Fall 2017 and graduated 6th May, 2022. Boy oh boy, did life throw curve balls!It surely was neither an easy nor a linear journey and things hardly went as planned. If I had a penny for every time I thought of quitting, I just may be able to retire now, haha!

The good: I PhinisheD, made great friends now turned family and connections along the way, interned with a great company, picked up diverse skill set and had an amazing support system.

The flip side: Covid stalled my research by nearly 2 years, waited about 10months for the new instruments needed for my work and finally when they’d been delivered, these instruments broke down on me one by one and eventually, all four LC-MS instruments were broken AT THE SAME TIME!!!!

The sad: my mom passed away right after Christmas of 2020 and it broke me! Mama, your girl made it 🥺🥺!I’m grateful for my family, amazing advisor Dr. Tammy Boles, friends and grateful to God!

In all, I am thankful for the journey so far and what lies ahead AND I have started a #newjob as an Environmental Strategy Specialist at Cummins Inc.
