The Philadelphia 76ers have officially parted ways with Daryl Morey, the team’s president of basketball operations, following a six-year tenure. The decision was made after a meeting between Morey and team owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer on Tuesday.
Despite the change in the front office, the 76ers have opted to retain Nick Nurse as their head coach, signaling confidence in his leadership moving forward.
Bob Myers, who serves as president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, will take charge of the search for a new head executive for the 76ers. In the interim, Myers will also oversee the basketball operations department, ensuring continuity during the leadership transition.
Morey, who was hired by the Sixers in 2020 after his departure from the Houston Rockets, was instrumental in shaping the team’s roster. Under his leadership, the Sixers drafted Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, and signed Paul George in free agency. Morey’s notable moves also included the high-profile trade of Ben Simmons for James Harden in 2022, followed by Harden’s subsequent trade to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2023.
Although Morey signed a contract extension in 2023 that ran through the 2027-28 season, the team has struggled to reach the Conference Finals under his watch, despite making several appearances in the Conference Semifinals. The Sixers have not advanced to the Conference Finals since 2001.
With this organizational shakeup, Philadelphia now faces a critical juncture as they continue their search for a path to championship contention.
