Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Wes Edens has reportedly found himself at the center of an alarming federal extortion case, with prosecutors accusing a Chinese-born divorcée of demanding over $1 billion following a brief sexual relationship.
Edens, identified as “Victim 1” in the federal blackmail case, is said to have been targeted by Changli Luo, also known as Sophia Luo. According to prosecutors, Luo allegedly initiated a months-long extortion campaign, threatening to release explicit videos and images unless Edens paid large sums of money. At one point, prosecutors claim that Luo demanded a staggering $1.215 billion, nearly half of Edens’ estimated $2.5 billion net worth.
Edens, 64, is a prominent figure in both the sports and finance industries. He co-founded Fortress Investment Group, chairs New Fortress Energy, and holds a stake in the English Premier League’s Aston Villa. Since becoming part of the Milwaukee Bucks ownership group in 2014, Edens has played a key role in the team’s success, including overseeing their 2021 NBA championship victory led by Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The ordeal reportedly began when Luo reached out to Edens on LinkedIn in 2022, shortly after his divorce. The pair later met in New York, where they reportedly engaged in a sexual encounter in June 2023. Following the encounter, Luo allegedly sent Edens emotional messages expressing love, but the situation soon took a darker turn after Edens stopped responding to her.
Prosecutors claim that Luo threatened to contact Edens’ family, business partners, investors, and the media, claiming she had hidden cameras in her apartment that had recorded everything. She also reportedly accused Edens of misconduct and demanded both public apologies and substantial financial compensation.
The case took another strange turn when FBI agents reportedly searched Luo’s apartment and allegedly found hidden phones inside a laundry basket and even a box of sanitary pads. Some of these devices reportedly contained explicit material, including altered pornographic images with Edens’ face digitally inserted onto another man’s body.
In an attempt to avoid public scandal and protect his family, Edens reportedly agreed to a $6.5 million settlement during mediation. However, prosecutors allege that Luo later tried to renegotiate the settlement after allegedly learning she had contracted HPV, demanding over $1 billion instead.
Luo has pleaded not guilty to multiple federal charges, including blackmail and destruction of records. She was arrested at JFK Airport while allegedly attempting to board a flight to China and is currently under home detention with a $500,000 bond, awaiting trial later this year.
