The visit marked a significant milestone: it was the first time Kate brought her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood work to the international stage, and it was also her first overseas work trip since her cancer diagnosis in March 2024 and subsequent remission announcement in January 2025.
“Over the past two days in Reggio Emilia, I have seen firsthand the power of nature and creativity that put human connection at the centre of a child’s world,” Kate wrote. “I have had such a deeply moving and unforgettable time here. Thank you to the people of Reggio Emilia for welcoming me into a culture of care with such warmth and generosity.”
She emphasized the importance of supporting early childhood development, adding: “Our collective work in early childhood must be to protect and nurture the connections that form the foundations of life-long wellbeing.” Kate signed her message with “Grazie di cuore, C,” meaning “Thank you from the heart,” with “C” standing for Catherine to signal that the note came personally from her.
The Princess of Wales had a busy itinerary over the two days, from Wednesday, May 13, to Thursday, May 14. Her visit included a stop at the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre, the hub of the Reggio Emilia philosophy, where she expressed how long she had hoped to make the trip. “I’ve been meaning to come for quite some time, so to be here now is very exciting,” she said, according to royal reporter Roya Nikkhah.
