Hassan-James Abbas, a 32-year-old surgical resident at the University of Toledo.A former surgical resident in Ohio is facing potential prison time after pleading no contest to multiple charges linked to an alleged incident involving abortion medication and his pregnant girlfriend, according to prosecutors in Ohio.

Hassan-James Abbas, 32, formerly based in Toledo, Ohio, entered a no contest plea to charges including unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug and identity fraud. Prosecutors say the case could result in a sentence of up to five years in prison and fines of up to $15,000.

According to the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office, the allegations stem from events in December 2024. Investigators say Abbas allegedly obtained abortion medication online using the personal information of his ex-wife, including her name, birthdate, and driver’s license details.

Court records and prosecutorial statements indicate that Abbas was indicted in December 2025, roughly a year after the alleged incident occurred.

Authorities allege that Abbas’s girlfriend at the time—who had previously been his patient—told him she was pregnant in early December 2024 and declined to terminate the pregnancy. Prosecutors say that shortly after, Abbas ordered abortion medication online and later invited her to his home in Holland, Ohio.

He is accused of crushing the pills into powder and, while the woman was asleep, forcibly placing the substance into her mouth. Prosecutors further allege that when she attempted to call emergency services, he took her phone and ended the call.

The woman later left the residence and sought medical attention at a hospital. It has not been confirmed whether the pregnancy continued following the incident.

Abbas was previously a surgical resident at the University of Toledo, and his medical license was suspended in November 2025 by the State Medical Board of Ohio amid the investigation.

Under his plea agreement, Abbas pleaded no contest to four charges, while additional charges including abduction and evidence tampering are expected to be dismissed at sentencing. His sentencing is scheduled for June.
