Mayor Ron Shinnick of Cohutta reportedly posted a notice at the Cohutta Police Department stating that, as of May 6, the department had been dissolved and all officers were terminated.
The decision came after several officers allegedly signed an open letter opposing the return of Pam Shinnick, the mayor’s wife, to her position as town clerk. She had previously been removed from the role following allegations of creating a hostile work environment, according to reporting from local media outlets including WDEF and the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
Dispute inside town government
Prior to the mass termination, town officials and legal representatives stated that concerns surrounding the situation had been addressed through internal discussions and mediation. However, according to former officers, tensions continued behind the scenes leading up to the firings.
Former Sgt. Drew Thornton told local media he was informed the mayor still intended to dismiss officers despite ongoing discussions.
Mayor Shinnick has denied claims that the decision was made in retaliation.
Law enforcement services transferred to sheriff’s office
Following the dissolution of the police department, the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it has taken over law enforcement responsibilities for the city of Cohutta. Officials said the transition ensures that residents will continue to receive emergency response services without disruption.
Authorities emphasized that response times and public safety coverage are expected to remain stable during the transition period.
The situation remains under local review as community members react to the sudden restructuring of the town’s law enforcement system.
