Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has officially been named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season, becoming just the 14th player in league history to win back-to-back MVP honors.
The announcement came just before Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons, confirming earlier reports from ESPN’s Shams Charania. The award adds another milestone to a historic run for the 27-year-old and his defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
SGA led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a league-best 64–18 record, securing the top seed in the Western Conference for the second straight year. He averaged 31.1 points per game, along with 6.6 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.4 steals while shooting 39% from three-point range.
This marks the eighth consecutive season an international player has captured the MVP award, highlighting the global evolution of the NBA’s superstar landscape.
In his post-announcement comments, Gilgeous-Alexander credited his development and work ethic, while also praising his teammates for helping sustain Oklahoma City’s dominance.
“I saw growth really fast… if I can duplicate that every summer and get better at that rate, I’ll eventually get to where I want to go,” he said.
The Thunder guard’s rise has been one of the league’s most remarkable success stories. Drafted No. 11 overall in 2018 by the Charlotte Hornets and later traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, Gilgeous-Alexander eventually arrived in Oklahoma City as part of the blockbuster Paul George deal — a move that included multiple first-round picks.
Since then, he has developed into the centerpiece of a championship-contending team, adding MVP trophies, scoring titles, and Clutch Player of the Year honors to his résumé.
Oklahoma City has carried its dominance into the postseason, remaining undefeated through the first two rounds and continuing its push for a repeat championship. With Gilgeous-Alexander leading the way, the Thunder now enter the Western Conference Finals as the clear title favorites.
The MVP win further cements his status as the face of a new NBA era — one that already includes multiple international superstars and a rapidly shifting balance of power across the league.
