What began as the heartbreaking disappearance of a young Texas mother and her newborn daughter in 2019 soon evolved into one of the most disturbing betrayal cases investigators had ever seen — involving a lifelong friendship, a fake pregnancy, and a deadly plan centered around a baby.

Heidi Broussard, a 33-year-old mother from Austin, Texas, vanished on Dec. 12, 2019, alongside her 2-week-old daughter, Margo Elizabeth Carey, shortly after dropping off her older son at school. Her fiancé, Shane Carey, contacted authorities after returning home and discovering both mother and newborn missing.

A statewide search quickly began as investigators desperately tried to locate the pair.

Days later, police uncovered surveillance footage showing Broussard entering a vehicle linked to her longtime friend, Magen Fieramusca. Authorities soon searched Fieramusca’s property and made a horrifying discovery: Broussard’s body was found hidden inside the trunk of a vehicle parked outside the home.

Medical examiners later determined Broussard had been strangled to death with a dog leash.

Inside the residence, investigators also located baby Margo alive and physically unharmed. According to police, Fieramusca had allegedly been presenting the infant as her own child after falsely claiming to friends and family that she was pregnant around the same time as Broussard.

The two women had reportedly known each other since childhood after meeting at a Texas Bible school when they were just 11 years old. Friends and relatives described Broussard as outgoing, adventurous, and deeply loved by those around her.

As investigators pieced together the timeline, they learned Fieramusca had closely inserted herself into Broussard’s pregnancy journey — even attending the birth of baby Margo shortly before the disappearance.

Authorities later alleged that Fieramusca carefully planned the crime in an attempt to take the newborn and pass her off as her own daughter. Several witnesses told investigators they believed Fieramusca was pregnant, though authorities never confirmed whether she had actually been expecting a child.

After her arrest, Fieramusca faced charges including capital murder, kidnapping, and tampering with a corpse. In 2023, she accepted a plea deal that reduced the murder charge to first-degree murder while waiving her right to appeal.

She was sentenced to 55 years in prison with the possibility of parole in 2047.

Today, Fieramusca remains incarcerated at the William P. Hobby Unit in Texas, where she is expected to remain for decades.

The tragic case has once again gained public attention following the release of the dramatized film Stolen Baby, which revisits the shocking events surrounding Broussard’s death and the kidnapping of her newborn daughter.
