Luca Moretti trusted fear more than loyalty.
Fear kept men obedient. Fear kept enemies cautious. Fear built empires.
As the most powerful mafia boss on the East Coast, Luca ruled his criminal empire with cold precision. Politicians feared him. Rivals avoided him. Even the men closest to him never fully relaxed around him.
Because Luca Moretti had one rule above all else: trust no one.
Especially after his wife’s death three years earlier.
Since then, Luca had become colder, quieter, more dangerous. The only softness left in him belonged to his eight-year-old son, Matteo, the one person capable of calming the storm constantly burning behind his eyes.
Everything else in Luca’s world was business, blood, and betrayal.
That was why he immediately reached for his gun the moment he stepped inside his private jet and saw a woman sitting in the back corner.
She looked terrified.
Her dark hair was messy, her expensive dress stained with dirt, and her hands trembled violently as she stared at him.
The jet door closed behind Luca with a heavy thud.
Two armed guards stepped forward instantly.
“Boss?” one of them asked.
The woman stood up so quickly she nearly lost her balance.
“Please,” she whispered desperately. “Don’t let them kill me.”
Luca’s expression didn’t change.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Sofia Vale.”
He had never heard the name before.
“You have ten seconds before my men drag you off this plane.”
Fear flashed across her face.
“They murdered my brother,” she blurted out. “And someone inside your organization ordered it.”
The cabin went silent.
Luca slowly lowered his gun—but only slightly.
“What did you say?”
Sofia swallowed hard.
“My brother worked for one of your shipping companies in Miami. Two nights ago, he discovered something he wasn’t supposed to.”
“And what exactly was that?”
She hesitated.
Then she pulled a small silver flash drive from her purse.
“Human trafficking routes,” she said quietly. “Children.”
Luca’s eyes darkened instantly.
The temperature inside the jet seemed to drop.
Luca ran many illegal operations. Smuggling. Weapons. Gambling. Extortion.
But trafficking children was forbidden in his empire.
Anyone caught involved in it died painfully.
“You’re lying,” one of Luca’s guards snapped.
Sofia flinched. “I wish I was.”
Luca extended his hand slowly.
“Give me the drive.”
She hesitated before placing it in his palm.
“After my brother copied those files, someone found out,” she continued shakily. “Yesterday morning, they dumped his body outside my apartment.”
Luca stared at her carefully.
“And why come to me?”
“Because the men chasing me work for you.”
That answer unsettled even his guards.
Luca sat down slowly across from her.
For the first time in years, uncertainty flickered in his eyes.
“Who?” he asked quietly.
Sofia looked terrified to even say the name.
Finally, she whispered,
“Victor Salazar.”
The entire cabin froze.
Victor Salazar wasn’t just another soldier in Luca’s organization.
He was Luca’s oldest friend.
The man who had helped build the empire from nothing.
The godfather to Matteo.
The one person Luca trusted completely.
One guard immediately stepped forward angrily.
“That’s enough.”
But Luca raised a hand, stopping him.
His expression remained unreadable.
“How do you know Victor?”
“My brother worked under one of his port managers,” Sofia explained quickly. “He accidentally intercepted financial records connected to missing girls being transported through cargo shipments.”
Luca said nothing.
But inside, something dangerous was beginning to unravel.
Because Victor controlled the ports.
Every shipment.
Every container.
Every route.
“You expect me to believe my own brother betrayed me?” Luca asked coldly.
Sofia frowned slightly.
“Brother?”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“Not by blood.”
She looked down briefly before speaking again.
“I know what kind of man you are, Mr. Moretti.”
A humorless smile touched his lips.
“You clearly don’t.”
“They say you’re ruthless,” she continued. “But they also say children are off-limits. Women too.”
Luca leaned back slowly.
“And?”
“And I’m hoping at least one rumor about you is true.”
The jet became silent again except for the sound of rain hitting the windows outside.
Luca studied her carefully.
Most people lied to survive.
But Sofia looked beyond fear now.
She looked exhausted.
Broken.
Like someone who had already lost everything.
One of Luca’s guards suddenly stepped closer and whispered into his ear.
“Boss… we have a problem.”
“What?”
“There are men approaching the hangar.”
Luca’s eyes narrowed instantly.
“How many?”
“Six vehicles. Armed.”
Sofia’s face lost all color.
“They found me.”
Luca stood immediately.
“Who knows she’s here?”
“No one,” the guard answered.
That was the problem.
If armed men already knew about Sofia, then someone close to Luca was feeding information in real time.
Someone inside his inner circle.
Luca slowly looked down at the flash drive in his hand.
Then at Sofia.
Then toward the dark jet windows.
For the first time in years, he felt something unfamiliar.
Paranoia.
Real paranoia.
Because if Victor Salazar truly betrayed him… then his entire empire was infected from the inside.
Gunfire suddenly exploded outside the aircraft.
Sofia gasped.
The guards immediately pulled their weapons.
Luca didn’t move.
His face became frighteningly calm.
Another burst of gunfire echoed across the runway.
Then came screaming.
One guard looked toward Luca nervously.
“Orders?”
Luca finally turned toward Sofia again.
Her eyes were full of terror.
“Please,” she whispered. “If you send me out there, they’ll kill me.”
Luca stared at her for several long seconds.
Then he made a decision that shocked everyone in the cabin.
He handed his gun to her.
The guards looked stunned.
“Boss—”
“If she wanted me dead,” Luca interrupted coldly, “she would’ve waited until I sat down.”
Sofia looked at the weapon in disbelief.
Her hands trembled as she held it.
Luca buttoned his suit jacket slowly.
Then his expression hardened into something lethal.
“No one hunts people under my protection,” he said quietly.
The cabin door suddenly burst open.
One of Luca’s wounded men stumbled inside, blood covering his shirt.
“They’re not here to grab the girl,” he gasped painfully.
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“Then what do they want?”
The man looked up fearfully.
“They came for you.”
Silence.
Pure silence.
Then Luca smiled.
Not with amusement.
Not with warmth.
But with the terrifying calm of a man realizing betrayal had finally reached his doorstep.
He slowly turned toward Sofia.
“You were right,” he said softly.
Outside, bullets continued tearing through the night.
Inside the jet, Luca Moretti finally understood the truth.
Someone inside his empire had declared war on him.
And now the only witness still alive was the frightened woman sitting in front of him.
