What initially appeared to be a tragic late-night car accident soon turned into one of the most closely watched criminal cases in Ohio — leaving one grieving family divided, devastated, and still searching for peace years later.
Dominic Russo was only 20 years old when he lost his life in a violent crash in Strongsville, Ohio, on July 31, 2022. Also killed in the collision was 19-year-old Davion Flanagan. Behind the wheel was Dominic’s girlfriend, Mackenzie Shirilla, who survived the crash despite the devastating impact.
According to investigators, Shirilla suddenly accelerated her Toyota Camry to nearly 100 mph before crashing into a brick building in the early morning hours after leaving a party.
Authorities later revealed that the vehicle’s black box data showed the accelerator pedal had been fully pressed moments before impact, with no evidence of braking. Investigators also stated there were no mechanical failures that could explain the sudden acceleration.
The crash quickly drew national attention after prosecutors argued it was not an accident but an intentional act. Shirilla, who was 17 at the time, denied intentionally causing the crash and said she could not remember what happened in the moments leading up to it.
In 2023, she was convicted in connection with the deaths of Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan.
At the center of the emotional case was Dominic’s family, who initially stood firmly beside Mackenzie and believed the crash had been accidental.
Dominic’s father, Frank Russo, publicly defended her in the early stages of the investigation. Family members described Dominic and Mackenzie as inseparable despite ongoing struggles in their relationship.
However, the family’s perspective began to change after investigators uncovered videos and testimony suggesting the relationship had become volatile. According to court testimony and footage later discussed in Netflix’s documentary The Crash, Dominic had reportedly attempted to end the relationship multiple times.
Investigators were also shown footage allegedly depicting Mackenzie trying to force her way into Dominic’s home after arguments between the couple.
Dominic’s brother Angelo later told authorities the relationship had become increasingly toxic, while Dominic’s sister Christine admitted she initially believed the collision was simply a tragic accident.
But after seeing the evidence presented during the investigation, several family members came to believe the crash had been intentional.
Even so, Dominic’s father expressed mixed emotions regarding Mackenzie’s prison sentence, saying he did not want another family completely destroyed despite his own devastating loss.
His sister Christine, however, publicly disagreed with the length of the sentence, arguing that Dominic and Davion had permanently lost their futures.
Years later, the Russo family continues speaking publicly about Dominic’s life and legacy. Both Frank Russo and Christine Russo appeared in Netflix’s The Crash, where they reflected on the grief that continues long after the headlines faded.
Since the documentary’s release, Christine has also criticized aspects of the production, claiming parts of the story were inaccurately portrayed. She has since launched her own podcast focused on correcting misinformation and preserving her brother’s memory.
While some members of the Russo family have stepped away from public attention, others continue advocating for Dominic and Davion, hoping the two young men will be remembered for their lives rather than only the tragedy surrounding their deaths.
