🚨 The Julio Foolio murder trial has officially entered a major new phase.

Jury selection is officially underway in Tampa for the high-profile murder trial involving the 2024 killing of Jacksonville rapper Julio Foolio.

The rapper, whose legal name was Charles Jones, was fatally shot outside a Holiday Inn near the University of South Florida area in June 2024 while celebrating his 26th birthday. The shooting also left three other people injured.

Four defendants — Sean Gathright, Rashad Murphy, Davion Murphy, and Isaiah Chance — are facing first-degree murder charges in connection with the case.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against all four men, making the trial one of the most significant criminal proceedings currently taking place in Florida.

According to court proceedings, approximately 250 potential jurors were called to begin the selection process. Attorneys for both the prosecution and defense are expected to carefully examine potential jurors, particularly given the possibility of capital punishment if convictions are secured.

The case will proceed with a single jury hearing evidence against all four defendants. The decision comes after the judge denied requests from defense attorneys seeking separate trials.

Prosecutors allege the defendants were connected to rival Jacksonville gangs and worked together in a coordinated effort that ultimately led to Foolio’s death.

During jury selection, prosecutors outlined some of the evidence they intend to present at trial, including cellphone data, witness testimony, surveillance evidence, and information related to alleged gang affiliations.

The prosecution argues that these materials will help establish motive, planning, and participation in the shooting.

The case has already resulted in one conviction. Alicia Andrews was previously convicted of manslaughter after prosecutors said she helped track Foolio’s movements before the shooting occurred.

Defense attorneys have maintained that the state must prove each defendant’s individual involvement beyond a reasonable doubt and are expected to challenge key portions of the prosecution’s evidence throughout the trial.

With the death penalty on the table and extensive public interest surrounding the case, legal observers expect jury selection alone could take significant time before opening arguments begin.

The trial is expected to continue over the coming weeks.
