Today, a judge decided Richins will spend the rest of her life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Kouri Richins already knew she was going to prison for murder.
The question she awaited a judge’s answer on Wednesday: Would she spend the rest of her life there without a chance to get out?
Richins and her husband, Eric Richins, were raising three children together before Eric Richins died of a fentanyl overdose in 2022 at their Summit County home.
In March, after a 13-day trial that included witness testimony from more than 40 people, Richins was convicted of poisoning her husband.
Jurors found Richins guilty of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, two counts of insurance fraud and one count of forgery. She did not testify in her own defense.
On Wednesday, she learned she would spend life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The sentencing fell on what would’ve been Eric Richins’ 44th birthday. The Salt Lake Tribune had a reporter in the courtroom for the hearing.
