Chicago, IL — Lil Durk has bolstered his legal team with one of Hip-Hop’s most high-profile defense attorneys. The rapper recently hired Brian Steel, the same lawyer who successfully defended Young Thug in the landmark YSL trial, to represent him in his federal murder-for-hire conspiracy case.
Steel filed paperwork to officially join Durk’s defense team, replacing attorney Jonathan M. Brayman. With Drew Findling already on board, Durk now has a formidable legal team recognized for navigating some of the most complex cases in the music industry.
Durk has been detained since October 2024, awaiting trial. Steel’s reputation for tenacity is well-known: during the Young Thug trial, he refused to reveal confidential sources, resulting in a temporary jailing, demonstrating his commitment to protecting clients. His work has even been honored in popular culture, with Drake and PartyNextDoor dedicating the song “Brian Steel” to him.
Steel’s approach emphasizes challenging federal prosecution, despite the government’s 94–95% conviction rate in federal cases, which he recently addressed on Killer Mike’s Conversate podcast, asserting, “Not with us.”
The trial was initially scheduled to begin next month but has been delayed, and co-defendants’ requests for separate trials were denied. Steel’s addition could dramatically shift the dynamics of the case, providing Durk with a defense team experienced in high-stakes federal proceedings.
