LA Knight has opened up about the challenges he faced after his much-anticipated call-up to WWE’s main roster, shedding light on some unusual directives from Vince McMahon. Despite his undeniable popularity among fans, Knight’s journey has been anything but smooth since stepping into the spotlight.
In a candid chat with Chris Van Vliet on the show Insight, Knight reflected on his transition from the beloved LA Knight to the character Max Dupri. He revealed that McMahon had specific instructions for him, stating, “You gotta talk soft, I don’t want you to say or do any of the things that you used to do.” Knight noted that McMahon seemed unfamiliar with his previous work, suggesting that he was given only a limited understanding of the character he had built.
At 43 years old, Knight shared that McMahon was reportedly hesitant to push him as a full-time wrestler, primarily due to his age. Instead, there was a push to position him more as a manager. “That first day of introducing the models, he came down and said, ‘I need you to talk softer,’” Knight recalled, expressing his confusion over the direction. “I thought, if I’m doing a presentation, I need to be a little bigger, right? But it’s his show.”
Knight also recounted how he was initially sold on the idea that his Max Dupri character would evolve similarly to Roddy Piper’s early career, starting as a manager and eventually transitioning into a full-time wrestler. Unfortunately, the character never gained the traction he had hoped for, leading to a gradual return to his original persona, LA Knight.
