For years, basketball fans have argued over one of sports’ most enduring questions: Is LeBron James or Michael Jordan the greatest player in NBA history?
Now, LeBron himself is offering his perspective—and he’s making it clear that he has no interest in diminishing Jordan’s legacy.
Speaking with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the Los Angeles Lakers star addressed the debate that has followed him throughout much of his career. Rather than declaring himself the GOAT, James emphasized that comparing the two players isn’t as straightforward as many fans believe.
“I never have compared myself to MJ because our games are totally different,” James said.
According to LeBron, the biggest difference comes down to playing style. While Jordan built his reputation as one of the most dominant scorers in basketball history, James has always viewed himself as a playmaker first.
“I have been a point-forward/forward-point my whole life. I have always looked for the pass,” James explained. “MJ looked for the shot.”
At the same time, LeBron acknowledged that both players excelled in different areas.
The NBA’s all-time leading scorer said there are aspects of his game that he believes compare favorably to Jordan’s, while also recognizing that Jordan possessed strengths he did not.
“He was great. We’re both great. We’re both great basketball players,” James said.
The four-time NBA champion added that the conversation often becomes unnecessarily divisive, with fans feeling the need to elevate one player by criticizing the other.
“You can look at both of us and say that you love both of us without trying to tear down the other person,” he said.
James described the GOAT debate as “a very tiring conversation” and compared it to the kind of endless discussions that take place in barbershops and among sports fans.
Perhaps most revealing was the respect LeBron expressed for Jordan’s influence on his life and career.
Growing up, James studied Jordan’s game and dreamed of achieving similar success on basketball’s biggest stage.
“I never thought that I could be him, but I dreamed of the opportunity to live in the shoes that he lived in,” James said.
From game-winning shots to signature sneakers and global superstardom, Jordan provided inspiration for a young LeBron who hoped one day to reach the highest level of the sport.
More than two decades into his NBA career, James believes both players occupy unique places in basketball history.
Rather than trying to settle the GOAT debate once and for all, LeBron’s message was simple: greatness does not have to come at the expense of another legend.
