Ana Maria Henao, a 40-year-old Florida real estate investor, disappeared in Madrid on February 2, 2024, while trying to rebuild her life during a difficult divorce from her estranged husband, David Knezevich. Friends said she had moved to Spain for distance and clarity as the couple’s multimillion-dollar property dispute intensified.
Investigators later focused on surveillance footage from Henao’s apartment building. According to federal authorities, video showed a man wearing a motorcycle helmet entering the building, spray-painting security cameras, and later leaving with a suitcase. Prosecutors alleged that the suitcase contained Henao’s body, though her remains have never been found.
The case quickly expanded beyond Spain. Authorities alleged that Knezevich traveled across Europe before and after Henao vanished, with investigators reviewing rental car records, surveillance video, border movements, phone data, and digital communications. Federal prosecutors argued that the evidence showed planning, deception, and an effort to mislead friends after Henao disappeared.
One key piece of the investigation involved strange text messages sent from Henao’s phone after she vanished. Friends said the messages claimed she had met someone and would be away with limited service, but the wording raised concern. When she stopped responding, those closest to her contacted authorities, setting off an international missing-person investigation.
Knezevich was arrested in May 2024 and charged in federal court with crimes including kidnapping resulting in death and foreign murder of a U.S. national. He pleaded not guilty, and his defense argued that the government’s case was circumstantial. Prosecutors, however, said the evidence connected him to Madrid, the apartment building, and the alleged attempt to cover up Henao’s disappearance.
In April 2025, before the case could go to trial, Knezevich was found dead in federal custody in Miami. His death ended the criminal prosecution before a jury could hear the full evidence. For Henao’s family and friends, it left a painful reality: the accused man was gone, but Ana had still not been found.
The FBI has continued seeking information about Henao’s remains, offering a reward for tips that could help recover her body. The case remains a haunting example of how a missing-person report can become a complex international homicide investigation, built through surveillance footage, travel records, digital evidence, and the determination to find answers even after the suspect’s death.
