Rapper Mystikal, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in connection with a 2022 sexual assault case in Louisiana. The sentence was handed down on June 16 after he previously pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of third-degree rape in March, according to multiple local news reports.
The case stems from an incident reported in August 2022 in Ascension Parish. According to law enforcement statements at the time, a victim was hospitalized after sustaining injuries consistent with a sexual assault. Investigators later arrested Tyler and charged him with multiple offenses, including first-degree rape, domestic abuse battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, simple robbery, and property damage.
As the case moved through the court system, prosecutors ultimately agreed to dismiss several charges through nolle prosequi filings, including domestic abuse battery by strangulation and false imprisonment. The remaining charge was reduced to third-degree rape as part of a plea agreement that led to Tyler’s guilty plea earlier this year.
Ahead of sentencing, Tyler’s legal team attempted to withdraw the guilty plea, arguing that he did not have sufficient time to fully consider the consequences of the agreement. The motion also stated that he was under emotional distress at the time the plea was entered and felt pressured to make a quick decision.
