LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly in early negotiations on a new contract, with both sides showing mutual interest in continuing their partnership. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, discussions between James and the Lakers began shortly after the NBA Finals concluded, marking the official start of the offseason negotiation period.
Windhorst stated that there have already been “back and forth” talks between the two sides, with both parties expected to continue working toward an agreement over the next two weeks before free agency formally opens. While no deal has been finalized, the expectation around the league is that a resolution will eventually be reached.
The potential new contract is expected to come at a reduced salary compared to James’ previous $59.6 million cap hit. Reports suggest that LeBron could earn “vastly less” in order to give the Lakers additional flexibility to improve the roster around their core players.
Despite the financial adjustment, the goal of the negotiations appears to be maintaining a competitive roster structure. By lowering his salary, James would allow the Lakers to pursue additional talent in free agency, strengthening their depth while continuing to build around Luka Dončić as the franchise centerpiece.
James, who first joined the Lakers in 2018, has already delivered significant success in Los Angeles, including the 2020 NBA Championship and a Western Conference Finals appearance in 2023. Since the arrival of Dončić via trade, the organization has increasingly shifted toward a younger timeline while still valuing James’ veteran leadership and production.
There is also external interest in the four-time MVP, with the Golden State Warriors reportedly prepared to offer the full non-taxpayer midlevel exception worth approximately $15 million. However, league insiders believe that scenario remains unlikely as the Lakers remain confident in retaining him.
As the Lakers also navigate key free agency decisions involving Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura, LeBron’s contract situation is expected to play a central role in shaping the team’s offseason strategy. For now, optimism remains that both sides will ultimately agree on terms and extend one of the most successful player-franchise partnerships of the modern NBA era.
