Granite is one of the hardest natural stones used in ancient Egyptian architecture and sculpture, yet quarry sites like those in Aswan contain unfinished obelisks and tool marks that provide direct evidence of how craftsmen worked this material. Researchers have identified dolerite pounding stones at quarry sites, which were used to fracture and trim large blocks by repeated strikes, showing that brute force combined with technique was a key part of extraction.

Once blocks were extracted, cutting and shaping the granite involved a combination of copper saws and drills together with quartz‑rich sand as an abrasive. Because copper tools alone are much softer than granite, the hard quartz grains in the sand acted like microscopic cutting agents, slowly wearing away the stone as craftsmen worked it back and forth. Experimental archaeology has demonstrated that this method — taking advantage of the hardness of the abrasive relative to the stone — could produce deeply scored grooves and detailed shapes, albeit with great effort and time.
Evidence from unfinished artifacts, such as sarcophagi and obelisks still in the quarry, shows visible drill and tool marks that match these techniques, providing tangible insight into the workflow of ancient stoneworkers. Analysis of drilled granite objects, including those studied with electron microscopy, suggests that tubular drills with abrasives were likely used to create holes and guide cuts.

Documentation of Aswan’s quarries also reveals inscriptions, unfinished blocks, and paths for moving stone that enrich our understanding of how monumental granite pieces were quarried and transported within the limits of Bronze Age technology.
Taken together, the archaeological and experimental evidence shows that ancient Egyptians did not use advanced modern tools but instead relied on well‑understood physical methods — copper tools enhanced with abrasive sand, pounding stones, wedges, and skilled labor — to cut, shape, and finish granite. This combination of ingenuity and effort enabled them to build some of history’s most enduring stone monuments.
