The Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of around 25,000 fragments of ancient manuscripts discovered in caves near Qumran in the Judean Desert starting in 1947, containing some of the oldest known copies of biblical books and other writings from the Second Temple period of Judaism.

For decades, scholars have struggled to piece together these tiny fragments into coherent manuscripts because so many pieces were damaged, scattered, or disconnected. Without knowing which fragments originally belonged together, interpretations of the texts could vary widely.

In a collaborative project led by researchers from Tel Aviv University, Uppsala University in Sweden, and other institutions, scientists developed methods to extract ancient DNA from the animal skins (parchment) on which many scrolls were written. This process involved analyzing tiny samples of genetic material preserved in the parchment’s surface.

The DNA results helped researchers determine the species of animal used (mostly sheep, with a few cow hides) and the genetic relationships among individual animals used for different fragments. This information can indicate which fragments are more likely to have been part of the same original manuscript, much like matching pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

This genetic approach has already led to the realization that some pieces once thought to belong together actually originated from different animals — and likely different manuscripts — while closely related animal DNA suggests other sets of fragments were made from the same source.

Beyond helping reconstruction efforts, the DNA evidence also suggests that not all scrolls were produced in a single location like Qumran; some may have come from other parts of Judea, challenging earlier assumptions that the entire collection reflects only one community’s output.

While this DNA research doesn’t “prove” theological claims or sensational narratives, it does provide a powerful new tool for historians and archaeologists to understand the physical origins of these ancient texts and improve the accuracy of how scroll fragments are assembled and interpreted.
