Joshua Morrow Reflects on 30 Years as Nick Newman on The Young and the Restless: “Time Has Flown By”
For more than three decades, Joshua Morrow has been the face of Nicholas Newman on The Young and the Restless. From Near Miss to Life-Changing Opportunity
Morrow’s path to Genoa City began in the most unexpected way. After a string of auditions, including one for Dylan Shaw on The Bold and the Beautiful, Morrow hadn’t yet landed a breakout role. But fate intervened. Just a week after the disappointment, he received a call from the producers of The Young and the Restless, inviting him to audition for Nicholas Newman.
“They said, ‘Hey, this one didn’t work out, but we think you’d be great on Young & Restless,’” Morrow recalls. “I was like, ‘Awesome, man.’ I thought it would be a long process, but I walked into the corner office with Bill Bell and Ed Scott, did my read with Heather Tom, and Ed looks at me and goes, ‘You got the job, kid.’ I was like, ‘Seriously?’”
The casting decision came after the show had been searching for the perfect actor to play the son of supercouple Victor and Nikki Newman. “They already knew from my Bold & Beautiful audition that I had potential,” Morrow said. “I was very fortunate. On only my fourth audition ever, I booked it.”
First Day Jitters and a Surprise Schedule
Morrow’s first day on set, June 21, 1994, remains a vivid memory. “I had four scenes with Heather Tom starting at 7:30 a.m.,” he said. “I finished by 8 a.m., drove home, and my mom asked, ‘What are you doing here? Did you get fired?’ I told her, ‘No, I shot my scenes for the day.’ It was nerve-wracking and exciting all at once.”
The unconventional early schedule left him unprepared for the pace and dynamics of daytime TV, but it also gave him a taste of the freedom and flexibility the role could offer. “Back then, I was living with my mom, so it was surreal,” he added. “Now, it’s rarely like that, but I still remember that first day vividly.”
Becoming a Fan Favorite
Over the years, Morrow’s portrayal of Nick Newman evolved into a fan favorite. From complex family drama to romantic entanglements, the character has been central to Y&R storylines for decades. His chemistry with various leading ladies, combined with dramatic arcs and corporate intrigue, has made Nick a pivotal figure, akin to a living embodiment of Genoa City itself.
“The show has been a perfect fit,” Morrow says. “Thirty years later, here I am. Time has flown by, and I couldn’t be more proud. It’s been an awesome achievement, and I’m so thankful the show stuck with me.”
A Role That Could Have Been Someone Else’s
It’s fascinating to consider how different daytime TV might have been. If Morrow had landed the Dylan Shaw role on B&B, his career trajectory could have been entirely different. “I saw Dylan Neal a lot because he had started there just before me,” Morrow recalls. “He lasted two or three years. That could have been me.”
Instead, Nicholas Newman offered both longevity and depth. “I could stay as long as I wanted, assuming I was responsible and showed up on time,” Morrow said. “Some longevity was baked into it.”
Why Morrow Loves Daytime
For many actors, daytime TV is a stepping stone. For Morrow, it’s been a fulfilling career. “I couldn’t want to be famous less,” he admits. “I get to provide for my family, work with incredible people, and do a job that’s very fulfilling. It’s been like winning the Powerball.”
He appreciates the balance daytime allows: a demanding, creative career without the relentless public scrutiny of prime-time or film fame. “Nobody cares what I do outside of Genoa City, which is perfect,” he said. “I can live my life and still be part of something meaningful.”

“From the very start, I was hooked,” Morrow says. “I’ve grown with the character, faced incredible storylines, and been lucky enough to work with amazing people. Thirty years later, it’s been an incredible ride, and I’m grateful for every moment.”
