The Los Angeles Lakers may have just gained a significant advantage in the race to re-sign star guard Austin Reaves this summer. With Reaves expected to decline his $14.9 million player option, there had been widespread speculation that the Brooklyn Nets could make a massive offer in the range of four years and $178 million, potentially threatening the Lakers’ plans. In the trade, the Brooklyn Nets sent center Nic Claxton to the Chicago Bulls, while acquiring Julius Randle and the No. 28 overall pick in the NBA Draft from the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Bulls, meanwhile, now absorb Claxton’s contract, bringing their available cap space down to roughly $32 million. This means the Bulls are unlikely to make a serious run at the top-tier free-agent targets this summer, including Jazz center Walker Kessler. Previously, the Bulls and Nets were seen as the Lakers’ main competitors for both Kessler and Reaves, but the trade has changed that outlook considerably.
For the Lakers, the timing could not be better. With Reaves now having fewer potential suitors with the necessary cap space to outbid Los Angeles, the team can focus on negotiating a long-term deal without as much risk of losing their key guard. Reaves has been a crucial contributor for the Lakers alongside Luka Doncic and LeBron James, and retaining him is considered a priority for the franchise’s championship aspirations.
This development also benefits Los Angeles’ broader roster strategy. With the Bulls and Nets no longer likely to compete aggressively in free agency, the Lakers gain flexibility in addressing other offseason needs, including perimeter shooting, wing defenders, and potential upgrades at the center position. The cap space that would have gone to competing offers can now be allocated elsewhere to reinforce the team’s championship window.
