The Los Angeles Lakers’ offseason is already shaping up to be one of the most pivotal in recent years, with the future of superstar LeBron James dominating conversations across the NBA. After a 53-win season and a Western Conference semifinals exit at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder, much of the focus has shifted to how the Lakers plan to balance their veteran stars with their younger core, especially Luka Doncic. Amid all the uncertainty, Lakers legend and five-time champion Michael Cooper believes there is a clear first step for the organization: securing LeBron’s commitment for another season.
Cooper recently weighed in during Byron Scott’s “Fast Break” podcast, emphasizing that the Lakers’ offseason planning should revolve around James’ decision. He argued that while re-signing key role players such as Austin Reaves, Marcus Smart, and Deandre Ayton is important, nothing else should take precedence until LeBron clarifies his intentions. According to Cooper, LeBron’s presence on the roster would not hinder the team’s development—it would enhance it.
“I think first – you have to find out what LeBron wants to do. I think that’s gonna be a big plus,” Cooper said. “I really believe this – if LeBron stays, I don’t think that hurts the Lakers, they only get better because LeBron is better than 80% of these guys in the league, 80% of all these guys that are playing now.”
Cooper’s perspective comes at a time when the Lakers are juggling several critical offseason decisions. Austin Reaves, who has emerged as a promising co-star alongside Doncic, needs to be re-signed or replaced. Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton have player options for the second year of their deals, and Rui Hachimura, coming off a stellar 56.9 percent shooting performance from three-point range in the playoffs, also needs to be locked in for the long term. Despite all these moving parts, Cooper stresses that the first call should always be to LeBron.
The Lakers have been proactive in assessing their roster, balancing veteran leadership with emerging talent. Cooper believes that adding another year of LeBron James at a high level would only accelerate the team’s growth, helping young stars like Doncic reach their potential while still remaining competitive in the Western Conference. In his view, the combination of James’ experience, leadership, and skill remains unmatched by most of the league.
While some critics have questioned whether building around a 41-year-old superstar might limit opportunities for younger players, Cooper dismisses that concern. “LeBron is still one of the most productive players in the league,” he said. “He’s not just a presence on the court; he sets the tone for everybody else, and having him in your corner helps everyone develop and play at a higher level.”
As the Lakers move closer to the start of free agency, Cooper’s advice is clear: get LeBron’s decision first, then build around it. The next few weeks will be critical not only for LeBron’s future but for the Lakers’ ability to assemble a roster capable of competing for a championship in the 2026-27 season.
