At just 15 years old, Kara Robinson faced a nightmare that would change her life forever. On June 24, 2002, she was abducted by Richard Evonitz, a man later revealed to be a serial killer, while spending a sunny afternoon at a friend’s house in South Carolina.

What followed was an 18-hour ordeal of captivity and terror, during which Kara was subjected to unimaginable horrors. Yet, amid the chaos, she managed to summon her inner strength and devise a daring escape plan. “Fear barely even kicked in… the human will to survive really can’t be underestimated,” she reflected in a 2022 interview with PEOPLE.

Kara was abducted in broad daylight when Evonitz approached her under the guise of distributing pamphlets. After revealing a gun, he forced her into a storage container in the trunk of his car. During the harrowing drive to his apartment, Kara remained vigilant, noting every detail she could—turns taken, the radio station playing, and even the serial number on the container—hoping it would aid her escape.

Held captive in a cluttered apartment, Kara endured relentless assault and restraint. But as her captor slept, she found a moment of freedom. Using her teeth, she managed to free herself from her handcuffs and quietly unlatched the door. With her heart racing, she bolted into the parking lot and encountered two men who helped her reach safety.

Following her escape, Kara’s bravery led police back to Evonitz’s apartment, where they uncovered evidence linking him to the unsolved murders of three teenage girls in Virginia. Tragically, these cases had ended in tragedy, highlighting the gravity of her situation. “At that point, bells really went off in our heads that we just didn’t have a kidnapping of Kara Robinson,” Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott shared.

After a frantic manhunt, police tracked Evonitz to Florida, where he ultimately took his own life as authorities closed in. Inside his apartment, investigators found chilling evidence, including newspaper clippings about the missing girls and DNA linking him to the crimes.

In the years that followed, Kara transformed her traumatic experience into a platform for advocacy. Inspired by her ordeal, she pursued a career in law enforcement and worked on cases involving child 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮 and sexual assault. However, after becoming a mother to three children, she shifted her focus to empowering other survivors through storytelling.

Kara has shared her journey through various media, including a documentary titled “Escaping Captivity: The Kara Robinson Story,” and a Lifetime special featuring other survivors. Her story was also adapted into a Hulu film, “The Girl Who Escaped,” released in 2023.

Now, as she continues to inspire others, Kara remains a beacon of hope for survivors everywhere. “I always knew that what happened to me was something that happened so that I could help other people,” she stated, emphasizing her commitment to sharing her story with pride.
