LeBron James may be leaving the Los Angeles Lakers, but Bronny James’ future in purple and gold appears safe for now.
Following reports that LeBron has informed the Lakers he plans to continue his career elsewhere, attention quickly turned to what that could mean for Bronny. The father-son storyline was one of the most unique chapters in NBA history, but with LeBron moving on, Bronny must now continue building his career on his own terms.
The Lakers recently guaranteed Bronny’s contract for the 2026-27 season, keeping him on the roster beyond the deadline. That decision suggests Los Angeles still sees value in his development, even without LeBron attached to the roster.
Bronny, the No. 55 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, spent much of his early career developing through the Lakers’ system and with the South Bay Lakers in the G League. Over time, he began to show progress as a defensive-minded guard with improved confidence, stronger decision-making, and a more reliable outside shot.
Last season, Bronny appeared in 42 regular-season games and even saw playoff minutes, giving the Lakers a closer look at how he could fit as a depth guard moving forward. While he is not yet a finished product, his growth has made the team’s decision to keep him more understandable.
Still, LeBron’s departure changes the context.
Without his father on the roster, Bronny’s place in Los Angeles becomes purely about basketball development, roster fit, and financial flexibility. The Lakers are expected to be aggressive this offseason as they build around Luka Dončić, and every roster spot will matter.
That does not mean Bronny is in immediate danger of being moved. But it does mean the margin for patience may become thinner as the Lakers chase proven contributors and try to stay flexible under the luxury tax line.
For now, Bronny remains a Laker.
The next step is proving he belongs there because of his own growth, not because of his last name.
