Elon Musk Shares Rare Father-Son Moment With X AE A-XII During Public Conference Appearance
Elon Musk is usually seen in public as the billionaire behind Tesla, SpaceX, X, and some of the world’s most ambitious technology projects. But during an appearance at the MMA Global POSSIBLE Conference on April 18, the tech mogul offered a softer and more personal glimpse into his life as a father.
While speaking onstage during the conference panel, Musk was photographed with his 2-year-old son, X AE A-XII, sitting comfortably on his lap. The young child, whom Musk shares with musician Grimes, appeared relaxed as he ate a snack while his father took part in the event. At another moment, Musk was seen playing with his son in front of the audience, creating a rare public family scene that quickly attracted attention online.
The appearance gave viewers a look at the close bond between Musk and his young son, who has occasionally joined him during public and work-related moments. For fans and observers, the image of X sitting on his father’s lap stood in contrast to Musk’s usual public persona as a fast-moving executive focused on rockets, electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and social media.
This was not the first time Musk brought his son into one of his professional spaces. In December, after Musk took control of Twitter, he brought X to the company’s San Francisco headquarters. Musk later shared photos from the visit, including one image of his son’s access badge to his office, jokingly noting that X had his own Twitter badge. X AE A-XII is Musk’s son with Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher. The former couple also share a daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, who was born via surrogate in December 2021. Grimes later revealed that their daughter’s name had changed informally, saying she was now known as “Y,” “Why?” or even “?” — though she joked that the government would not recognize that version. According to Grimes, the name was meant to represent curiosity and the eternal question.
Musk and Grimes have had a complicated relationship in the public eye. The pair first made their red-carpet debut as a couple in 2018 and later went through multiple periods of separation and reconciliation. In March 2022, Grimes said that she and Musk had broken up again, but she still described him as her best friend and the love of her life, adding that her life and art remained connected to what she called “The Mission.”
Beyond his children with Grimes, Musk is also father to twins Vivian and Griffin and triplets Kai, Damian, and Sax with his first wife, author Justine Wilson. Musk and Wilson also had a firstborn son, Nevada, who died at 10 weeks old in 2002.
Musk’s family life drew additional public attention when reports surfaced that he had welcomed twins with Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis in November 2021, based on court documents cited by Business Insider. While Musk and Zilis did not directly make a public announcement at the time, Musk appeared to address the broader subject shortly afterward, writing on X that he was doing his best to help with what he described as the “underpopulation crisis.”
In a separate interview, Musk also spoke about his views on fatherhood and family size, saying that when it comes to having children, he wanted “as many as I am able to spend time with and be a good father.” That comment reflected a recurring theme in Musk’s public remarks: his belief that declining birth rates are one of the biggest long-term risks facing civilization.
Still, amid all the larger debates around Musk’s views, companies, and public statements, the moment with X onstage offered a more intimate portrait. It showed a child sitting quietly with his father in a setting usually reserved for executives, investors, and industry leaders.
