A tragic high-speed chase in Minnesota has left five young women dead, sparking outrage and heartbreak across the community. On June 16, 2023, a reckless driver, later identified as Derrick John Thompson, was involved in a catastrophic collision after fleeing from law enforcement at speeds exceeding 100 mph
The chaos began when a Minnesota State Trooper spotted Thompson’s black Cadillac Escalade speeding on Interstate 35W. The driver was weaving in and out of traffic, pushing the limits of safety before abruptly exiting the freeway. Just moments later, he blew through a red light and collided violently with a Honda Civic, resulting in a devastating crash that claimed the lives of five innocent young women.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with officers rushing to the wreckage only to find that the driver had fled on foot. As authorities began their search, the incident quickly escalated into a homicide investigation. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a man matching Thompson’s description running from the scene, wearing a gray skull cap and gray sweatpants.
In the aftermath, Thompson was apprehended behind a nearby Taco Bell, where he was found bleeding and disoriented. Despite his claims of having fallen, the evidence against him mounted rapidly. Surveillance footage revealed that he had rented the Escalade shortly before the crash, contradicting his assertions that someone else was driving.

He was sentenced to over 50 years in prison, combined with a separate federal sentence for 𝒹𝓇𝓊𝑔 and firearm charges found in the Escalade. This means Thompson is expected to spend around 64 years behind bars, a fate some hope will bring a measure of justice to the grieving families.
