Man United’s Garnacho stuns Everton with a sensational overhead kick

Alejandro Garnacho scored a sensational overhead kick to open the scoring for Manchester United less than three minutes into the game against Everton at Goodison Park.

Marcus Rashford passed to Diogo Dalot, who made a deep cross into the penalty area, where the Argentine met it with a magical overhead kick to send the ball flying into the top corner 15 yards from goal, leaving the home fans stunned and the visiting supporters in raptures.

Garnacho’s wonder goal was reminiscent of Wayne Rooney‘s against Manchester City in 2011 – and Gary Neville suggested in the Sky Sports commentary box that it was even better than that spectacular effort.

Sky Sports’ lead commentator Rob Hawthorne said: ‘That is outstanding. A spectacular goal from Alejandro Garnacho.’

Neville picked up: ‘He can’t believe it, Garnacho. I can’t believe it.

The goal drew immediate comparisons to Wayne Rooney’s in the Manchester derby in 2011

The goal came within the first three minutes of play at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon

‘I don’t think I’ve ever been in a stadium where I’ve seen an overhead kick as good as that, and I was there on the day Rooney scored in the Manchester derby. That was unbelievable, what we’ve just seen.

‘This atmosphere has been silenced somewhat. He moves back two or three short shuffled steps. Wow. That is a magical, magical goal. I think we’ll see that a few times.’

The nature of the strike left Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford at full stretch, but unable to get anywhere close to stopping Garnacho from opening the scoresheet.

Later on, Neville took a shot at a fellow pundit on the Sky Sports team, by saying: ‘I’ve got this vision at half-time of going into the studio and Roy Keane saying he should have saved it. It’s gonna happen, I’m telling you!’

At half-time, Keane said the strike was ‘absolutely amazing’, before saying: ‘I’m usually critical of goalkeepers, I’ll let him off for this one! Brilliant goal and a brilliant start from United.’

The early opener for the visitors was the first piece of action involving Everton since they were given a ten-point deduction by the Premier League.
