
On the morning of June 4, 1942, a Japanese fleet was moving across the Pacific with the confidence of a predator that believed its prey had no idea it was coming.
Four Japanese aircraft carriers formed the heart of the striking force.
Akagi.
Kaga.
Soryu.
Hiryu.
These were not ordinary ships. They were veterans of the attack on Pearl Harbor, symbols of a navy that had spent six months appearing almost unstoppable.
Behind the operation stood Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, one of the most respected naval minds in Japan.
His plan was elaborate.
He would threaten Midway Atoll, draw the surviving American carriers out of Pearl Harbor, destroy them in a decisive battle, and finish what Pearl Harbor had begun.
At least, that was what Yamamoto believed was about to happen.
More than a thousand miles away, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz was waiting for him.

Nimitz knew roughly where Yamamoto was going.
The Japanese believed they were setting a trap.

And somewhere on the carrier USS Enterprise, a quiet officer named Raymond Spruance was about to make one of the most important decisions of the entire war.

Japan would never again possess the overwhelming carrier superiority it had enjoyed at the beginning of the war.
But the real story of World War II at sea cannot be told through Midway alone.

Another had already rescued an army from a French beach when nearly everyone believed it was lost.

Thousands of Americans were killed or wounded.
Photographs of wrecked battleships created the image of complete destruction.
To the American public, Pearl Harbor looked like a devastating Japanese triumph.
Tactically, it was.
Strategically, hidden beneath the smoke, the picture was more complicated.
America’s aircraft carriers were not in the harbor.
Pearl Harbor’s repair facilities survived.
Its submarine base survived.
Critical infrastructure remained usable.

Vice Admiral William “Bull” Halsey had commanded Enterprise’s carrier force, but illness removed him from the coming battle.
Instead of allowing pride or rivalry to interfere, Halsey recommended Rear Admiral Raymond Spruance.
Spruance was not a flamboyant carrier commander.
He was not Halsey.
That was exactly what would make the next chapter so important.
On June 4, Japanese aircraft attacked Midway.
Admiral Chuichi Nagumo’s carrier force became trapped in a nightmare of timing.

Three carriers that had helped devastate Pearl Harbor were suddenly burning.
Hiryu survived long enough to launch attacks that crippled Yorktown.
For several terrifying hours, Japan still had a chance to turn the battle again.
Then Hiryu was found.
American dive bombers struck.

The force that had sailed east believing it would ambush the Americans had walked into an ambush of its own.

Critics argued that a more aggressive commander might have annihilated even more of the Japanese fleet.
Spruance saw the problem differently.
His primary mission was not to produce a spectacular headline.
It was to protect the invasion.
The Japanese strategy depended on attacking the American force.

For it to work, one force had to lure Halsey’s powerful carriers away from the landing area.
The bait was irresistible.
Japanese aircraft carriers.
By this point, the Japanese carriers had far fewer aircraft than they once possessed.
Their value as an offensive striking force had collapsed.
But they still looked like aircraft carriers.
And carriers had been the decisive weapon of the Pacific War.
Admiral Jisaburo Ozawa’s northern force existed partly to be seen.
Halsey saw it.
Then he went north.
Fast.

Exactly as the Japanese hoped.
The northern carriers appeared to represent the surviving heart of Japanese naval aviation.
Destroy them, and the threat could be eliminated.
But while Halsey raced north, Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita’s powerful Center Force turned toward the lightly protected American escort carriers supporting the landings.
The enormous battleship Yamato was there.
Cruisers were there.
Destroyers were there.
And standing between them and catastrophe was a group of small escort carriers, destroyers and destroyer escorts later immortalized under the name “Taffy 3.”
The situation was horrifying.
Tiny American escorts charged ships many times their size.
Pilots attacked with whatever weapons remained available.
Some aircraft made dummy runs when they had little or nothing useful left to drop.
Destroyers laid smoke and fired torpedoes.
Men fought with the knowledge that the mathematics were absurdly against them.
Back at higher command, confusion erupted over where Halsey’s battleships were.
A message associated with Nimitz became legendary.
“Where is, repeat, where is Task Force Thirty-Four?”
Signal padding added a phrase that reached Halsey in a form that sounded like a public rebuke:
“The world wonders.”
Halsey was furious.
The irony was brutal.
The admiral famous for aggressive instinct had been manipulated by a decoy precisely because the enemy understood that instinct.
For a moment, one of America’s greatest strengths had become a vulnerability.
Then came another reversal.
Kurita withdrew.
The resistance from Taffy 3, American air attacks, confusion and the complexity of the battle convinced him that he was facing a more dangerous situation than he actually was.

But those advantages were difficult to replace.
A carrier could be built.

There is no answer everyone will accept.
