The investigation into the infamous Gilgo Beach case has taken another disturbing turn after prosecutors announced new murder charges against suspected serial killer Rex Heuermann — bringing the total number of victims connected to him to six.
Authorities in Suffolk County revealed that the Long Island architect has now been indicted in the deaths of Sandra Costilla and Jessica Taylor, two women whose killings happened a decade apart and remained unsolved for years.
The latest accusations significantly expand the timeline of the case, pushing the alleged pattern of violence back to 1993.
Heuermann, who was arrested in July 2023 outside his Manhattan office, was already facing murder charges connected to the deaths of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes — four women whose remains were discovered near Gilgo Beach between 2010 and 2011.
Now investigators believe the case may reveal an even darker and longer history than previously imagined.
According to court documents, Sandra Costilla’s body was discovered in a wooded area in November 1993. She had suffered multiple sharp-force injuries, and investigators say the scene suggested a violent and personal attack.
Jessica Taylor’s case shocked investigators in a different way. Portions of her remains were first discovered in 2003, while additional remains were later recovered years afterward near Gilgo Beach. Prosecutors allege her body had been severely mutilated in what appeared to be an attempt to destroy identifying features and delay identification.
During Thursday’s announcement, authorities also revealed disturbing details about evidence allegedly uncovered during searches connected to Heuermann.
Among the most chilling discoveries was what prosecutors described as a detailed planning document — a collection of notes investigators believe outlined methods for avoiding detection before and after attacks.
The alleged document reportedly included references to DNA, fingerprints, blood evidence, cutting tools, acid, police scanners, and reminders about preparing before a “hunt.”
One note allegedly stated that being too tired could “create problems,” while another referenced striking victims harder to “take down” targets more effectively.
Investigators believe the wording demonstrates organization, preparation, and awareness of forensic evidence.
Authorities also say the suspect conducted numerous internet searches related to the Long Island serial killer investigation itself. According to prosecutors, searches allegedly included questions about why the killer had not yet been identified and how law enforcement tracked phone calls connected to the crimes.
The investigation further uncovered alleged searches involving violent abuse material and disturbing fantasies, prosecutors claim.
Law enforcement officials say DNA evidence, burner phone records, witness testimony, and vehicle information all played key roles in linking Heuermann to multiple victims over the years.
One major break in the case reportedly involved a Chevrolet Avalanche connected to the suspect that witnesses allegedly saw around the time one victim disappeared.
Meanwhile, the emotional impact continues to devastate the victims’ families.
Jessica Taylor’s mother described her daughter as compassionate, funny, and deeply caring toward children. Family members said she loved music, sang in her church choir, and dreamed of building a future that was ultimately stolen from her.
As investigators continue reexamining old evidence and unsolved cases, many now wonder whether the full scope of the Gilgo Beach investigation has truly been uncovered — or if more victims could still be linked to the suspect in the future.
Rex Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and remains in custody as the investigation continues.
