What once sounded like harmless praise from Magic Johnson eventually turned into a costly mistake for the Lakers — and an unbelievable prediction that came true almost perfectly.
Greece has produced several basketball legends throughout its history, but none have reached the global level of Giannis Antetokounmpo. The son of Nigerian immigrants arrived in the NBA with far less hype than many international stars before him, yet he quickly transformed into one of the most dominant players basketball has ever seen.
Unlike players such as Hakeem Olajuwon or Joel Embiid, Giannis never represented Nigeria internationally, choosing instead to embrace Greece as his basketball home. But when the Milwaukee Bucks selected him with the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, few people expected him to become the face of the league one day.
At the time, Giannis was viewed as a raw prospect — skinny, inexperienced, and still developing physically. The Bucks believed in his potential, but even they probably could not have imagined just how high his ceiling truly was.
One person who immediately saw greatness, however, was Magic Johnson.
Back in 2018, Johnson openly praised Antetokounmpo during an interview with ESPN and compared parts of Giannis’ game to his own legendary style of play. Magic highlighted Giannis’ ball-handling, passing ability, basketball IQ, and creativity as a playmaker, saying the young superstar understood the game at an elite level.
Johnson also made an even bolder statement at the time. He predicted Giannis would eventually become an MVP, lead Milwaukee to a championship, and put the Bucks on the global basketball map.
Years later, every single part of that prediction became reality.
But there was one major problem when those comments were made.
Magic Johnson was serving as president of basketball operations for the Los Angeles Lakers at the time. Under NBA anti-tampering rules, executives are not allowed to publicly praise players under contract with other teams in ways that could be interpreted as recruitment or influence.
The NBA viewed Johnson’s comments as a violation and fined the Lakers organization $50,000 for tampering.
Financially, the punishment was not devastating for a franchise like the Lakers. However, the situation created awkward headlines because it marked the second tampering-related issue involving Los Angeles that same season.
Earlier in the year, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka had already been investigated for contact involving Paul George’s representation after the team previously received a warning tied to Magic Johnson’s appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
During that appearance, Magic joked about recruiting George to the Lakers while jokingly implying he could communicate interest without directly saying it. The NBA did not view the situation lightly.
Ironically, Paul George never joined the Lakers and instead landed across town with the Clippers.
Meanwhile, Giannis eventually fulfilled Magic Johnson’s prediction almost word for word.
Fast forward to today, and Antetokounmpo has built one of the greatest résumés of his generation. He became a two-time NBA MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, NBA champion, Finals MVP, perennial All-NBA selection, and one of the most unstoppable forces the league has ever seen.
More importantly, he transformed Milwaukee into a globally recognized basketball destination exactly as Magic predicted years earlier.
Giannis now ranks among the Bucks’ all-time leaders in virtually every major statistical category and delivered the franchise its long-awaited championship in 2021, ending a title drought that had lasted half a century.
What once looked like over-the-top praise from Magic Johnson now feels more like one of the most accurate basketball prophecies ever made.
Still, despite all the success, there are growing signs that Giannis’ era in Milwaukee could eventually be nearing its end. After more than a decade with the franchise, rumors surrounding his long-term future continue to intensify as questions rise about the Bucks’ ability to remain championship contenders.
If Giannis and Milwaukee eventually part ways, it would close one of the most iconic chapters in modern NBA history.
But regardless of what happens next, Magic Johnson’s vision from 2018 already proved completely right — even if it cost the Lakers along the way.
