Black boy, 10, gives impassioned speech about racism at Oregon city council meeting

A young black boy has made an impassioned speech about racism at an Oregon city council meeting after he experienced discrimination at school.

Gavin Alston, 10, bravely spoke up in the room full of adults and told council members how unfair it was that kids called him a ‘monkey’ and the N-word in his fourth grade class.

The student from Redmond, Oregon said: ‘Why should us black people suffer from racism, when there are other races doing murders.

‘When us black people are showing respect, but we still get treated like c**p.’

Gavin said told the June 13 meeting that in the school he attends: ‘A lot of people have been calling me the N-word, or a monkey – even black boy.

‘One girl said to me, ‘I would hit you, but that’s called animal abuse.’

Gavin’s mother Heather posted an image of the 10-year-old boy writing out his speech in a notebook the night before the meeting

He said: ‘We should not get treated like this. We should get treated equally.

‘This is not fair to us black people.’

A council official made the lighthearted comment before Gavin started speaking: ‘Well, you certainly cut down the average age of our speakers.’

Gavin decided to speak at the meeting after a disturbing hate crime against a black person occurred in the area the week before.

Mayor Ed Fitch arrived at work Monday morning and found that someone had placed a dead raccoon against his office door.

With it, there was a racist note directed at Redmond City Councilor Clifford Evelyn, who is black.

Evelyn said: ‘This is a hate crime, plain and simple. I have complete confidence in the Redmond Police Department.’

The police are now investigating the worrying hate crime in the community.

‘My heart just melts. End racism.

‘He did it!!! I’m so very proud if this little boy!!! For standing up for what’s right!’

She also posted an image of the 10-year-old boy writing out his speech in a notebook the night before the meeting.

She posted the image, along with the caption:’Y’all come support in Redmond oregon @ 6 city council Gavin written out what he wants to say at the the city council meeting standing up for himself!! I’m so proud of him.’

Well wishers who watched the speech online came out in full support of Gavin.

Another said: ‘What a very inspiring speech. I was nearly in tears he’s a remarkable young man.’

And a third added: ‘Oh Gavin! You did absolutely amazing. It’s not fair that you have been treated differently, you’re a very strong young man.

‘Good job at standing up for yourself and others.’

Others spoke about their own experiences: ‘Every day that it happens it’s heartbreaking and sad that this happens everywhere.

‘It’s the parents that teach their children these kinds of words or sometimes they hear it and they end up picking it up.

‘That’s why I told my girls it should not matter what color they are or what kind of person they are always treat them with kindness and respect.

‘Gavin awesome Job keep doing what you’re doing someone will listen.’
