In a case that has sparked outrage and divided the community, Susan Lorincz, 60, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for manslaughter after fatally shooting her Black neighbor, Ajike “A.J.” Owens, 35, through her front door during a heated dispute. The shooting, which occurred in June 2023 in Ocala, Florida, was the culmination of a long-standing argument between Lorincz and Owens over the noise caused by Owens’ children playing near their homes.
Despite Lorincz’s claims of self-defense, jurors rejected her argument and convicted her of manslaughter, concluding that the shooting was driven more by anger than fear. The prosecution highlighted Lorincz’s actions as unnecessary and excessive, especially after Owens, a mother of four, had gone to Lorincz’s door to confront her over an alleged incident with her children. Lorincz fired a single shot from her .380-caliber handgun, killing Owens.
Lorincz apologized in court, saying she was “literally terrified” of Owens, but her defense, citing her childhood trauma and mental health issues, was not enough to sway the judge, who opted for a sentence slightly below the maximum of 30 years. The Owens family, devastated by the loss, pushed for the maximum sentence, with Owens’ mother, Pamela Dias, describing the profound and lasting impact the killing has had on their lives. Lorincz’s attorney argued for a lighter sentence, citing her mental health and claiming Owens was the aggressor.
The case has stirred protests, particularly in Ocala’s Black community, as many questioned the delayed charges and the decision to charge Lorincz with manslaughter instead of second-degree murder, a charge that could have carried a life sentence.
