The Charlotte Hornets have announced that they’ve signed head coach Charles Lee to a multiyear contract extension, securing his future with the team.
Lee, who took over for Steve Clifford in 2024, faced significant challenges in his first season, with the Hornets finishing with a 19-63 record as the team struggled with injuries. However, Lee made notable progress in year two, guiding Charlotte to a 44-38 record in the 2025/26 season, marking a 25-win improvement. Though the Hornets missed the playoffs by just one game, their performance was their best regular-season record since 2015/16.
“Charles has done an outstanding job establishing a foundation for who we want to be as a team,” said Jeff Peterson in the team’s official statement. “From day one, Charles and his staff have prioritized player development, creating an environment where each of our players are committed to getting better and continue to improve. He has built a team-first culture rooted in accountability, hard work, and professionalism. I’m excited to keep working closely with Charles as we continue to build the Hornets for long-term success.”
Although Charlotte’s season ended with a second loss in the play-in tournament to the Orlando Magic, the team’s strong second-half performance has left fans optimistic about the future.
While the exact terms of Lee’s new contract remain unclear, it’s believed that he still had two years left on his initial four-year deal, with reports suggesting his extension could run through at least 2029. It’s also possible that the extension could go beyond that, providing Lee with the opportunity to continue leading the Hornets for the foreseeable future.
