Premier League boss says his side tried hard to sign 22-year-old Chelsea player on deadline day

One Premier League manager has now admitted that his side tried to sign a player from Chelsea on deadline day.

Wolves Boss Gary O’Neil told Charlotte Duncker that his side were desperate to bring in Armando Broja yesterday, although having a game to prepare for scuppered their chances.

Broja was the main story of Chelsea’s deadline day, with them not biting and making a signing in the final hours of the window.

The goalposts continued to change on what they wanted in return for the academy graduate, with them eventually just looking for a small fee for someone to take him for the rest of the season.

This turned out to be something Fulham could do, with the local rivals agreeing on a deal as the deadline approached.

This left Wolves in the lurch, with them unable to add the striker they desired to their squad in time.

Wolves wanted Broja

After his side’s last-minute defeat to Manchester United, he admitted they had been trying to come to an agreement with Chelsea to sign Broja.

He said: “Playing football on deadline day is a crazy idea. Yeah, we didn’t manage to get a No 9 in, there were a few I really liked but we couldn’t afford any. We could afford some but not ones that I thought could help us.

“We were speaking to Chelsea for most of the day about Broja but we couldn’t match Fulham. That’s where we’re at as a football club but we haven’t been deducted 10 points.”

It remains to be seen whether Broja will have a chance to prove he belongs at Chelsea from next season with this loan spell.

However, the striker problems at Fulham right now do suggest that he could be in for some appearances pretty much straight away in the Premier League.
