New Goku Transformation Teased in Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero
Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero teases a new transformation for Goku in the long-awaited upcoming installment of the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
Goku will have a new transformation in the upcoming Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero! video game.
In the latest issue of V-Jump magazine, as translated by ShonenGames and DBcade, Goku will be able to transform into his new Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken form. This is a combination of his Super Saiyan Blue form and his Kaio-ken technique. “With [Goku’s] new transformation, you will be able to have a well-balanced battle,” the issue states. “You can also become Blue Kaio-ken.”

V-Jump magazine also delved deeper into a few of Goku’s and Vegeta’s character variants that have been revealed so far in Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. While Goku (Z Early) specializes in melee attacks, Goku (Z Mid) offers faster attacks and defense battles, and Goku (Z Late) can perform multiple Kamehameha attacks and transform into Super Saiyan 3. Vegeta (Z Scouter) and Majin Vegeta were also teased, along with his Great Ape transformation. Amusingly, V-Jump states that players will be able to recreate Vegeta’s famous kick to Semi-Perfect Cell in his Super Vegeta form.
Dragon Ball’s Famed Kaio-ken Technique Makes a Comeback in Sparking Zero
As longtime Dragon Ball fans know, the Kaio-ken technique was the first powerful technique that Goku learned in the early days of Dragon Ball Z. Taught to him by King Kai, Goku used the Kaio-ken technique to amplify his strength against Vegeta in their first climatic battle (Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will feature a rematch between the two Saiyans). However, Goku’s use of Kaio-ken came at the severe cost of his body, nearly leading to a win for the at-the-time villainous Saiyan.

After the introduction of Super Saiyan Goku, the Kaio-ken technique was mostly forgotten in Dragon Ball Z. Goku explained in Dragon Ball Super that using Kaio-ken as a Super Saiyan would be too much for the user’s body, resulting immediately in death. However, since Super Saiyan Blue requires a perfect mind and ki control, Goku was finally able to use Kaio-ken again during the “Universe Tournament” arc.
Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Currently, there is no confirmed release date for the game. A new Dragon Ball-themed trading card game will also be available in both tabletop and digital form.
