Jennifer Harmon, the renowned Broadway stage actress and longtime star of the soap opera One Life to Live, has passed away at the age of 82. According to her obituary, Harmon died on Saturday in New York City, though the cause of death has not been disclosed.
Harmon’s extensive stage career included over 20 Broadway performances in productions written by some of the most celebrated playwrights, including Wendy Wasserstein, Lillian Hellman, Neil Simon, Tennessee Williams, and Edward Albee. Her talent on stage earned her a respected place in the theater world.
Television audiences knew her best for her role as Cathy Craig Lord on One Life to Live, the ABC soap opera, where she portrayed the villainous character for 113 episodes between 1976 and 1978. Her performance on the show earned her an Emmy nomination in 1978.
Before her time on One Life to Live, Harmon appeared in over 330 episodes of How to Survive a Marriage, an NBC daytime drama that also helped launch the careers of actors like F. Murray Abraham and Armand Assante.
In addition to her soap opera work, Harmon made appearances on popular television series such as Dallas, St. Elsewhere, Another World, and The Good Wife.
On Broadway, she made her debut in the 1965 revival of You Can’t Take It With You. Throughout her career, Harmon returned to New York’s stages in productions such as The Sisters Rosensweig, The Dinner Party, Barefoot in the Park, and The Glass Menagerie. She was also a standby or understudy for major stars like Stockard Channing, Judi Dench, Jessica Lange, and Blythe Danner.
With her voice suited for radio, Harmon also contributed to CBS Radio Mystery Theater, appearing in 21 of its productions.
