Hopefully, third time really is the charm for Hollywood 𝑠e𝑥 symbol Scarlett Johansson.
The 34-year-old actress — who has starred in such hits as The Avengers, The Nanny Diaries, and Lost in Translation — just got engaged to Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost, 36, after two years of dating.
In what will be the third marriage for ScarJo, her engagement to her Weekend Update beau is just the latest in a string of Hollywood romances that have captivated and intrigued fans, while earning the actress a reputation for being somewhat promiscuous.
Although she has always shot down this suggestion however, on the very rare occasions when the famously-private actress has addressed her love life, she has been candid about her views on đť‘ eđť‘Ą.
‘Contrary to popular belief, I’m not promiscuous. There does seem to be a mistaken belief out there that I am đť‘ eđť‘Ąually available somehow — which is not to say that I’m not open-minded about đť‘ eđť‘Ą,’ she told Allure during a 2006 interview.
‘I do think on some basic level we are animals and by instinct we kind of breed accordingly.’
Congratulations! Scarlett Johansson and her SNL star beau Colin Jost are engaged to be married after two years together
During the same interview, Scarlett also revealed that she was getting HIV tests twice a year, however, she slammed suggestions that this had anything to do with her being promiscuous, insisting that ‘part of being a decent human to be tested for đť‘ eđť‘Ąually transmitted diseases’.
At the time, Scarlett was in a relationship with fellow on-screen star Joshua Hartnett, however she noted during the interview that, despite her numerous high-profile relationships, she did not consider herself a ‘serial monogamist’.
‘I wouldn’t say I’m a serial monogamist…’ she said. ‘I mean, I went through periods of time when I was, ah, single. But when I’m in a relationship, I’m in a relationship.’
Kicking butt! Scarlett plays Black Widow in the Avengers franchise and will reportedly earn $15 million to reprise the role in her own Marvel spin-off
Still, her dating life has always been the focus of much interest, intrigue and speculation — while her 𝑠e𝑥 symbol status has served her incredibly well on-screen, lan
Even controversial Woody Allen seemed to become captivated by the actress, describing her as ‘đť‘ eđť‘Ąually overwhelming’ while the two were promoting Match Point back in 2005.
‘It’s very hard to be extra witty around a đť‘ eđť‘Ąually overwhelming, beautiful young woman who is wittier than you are,’ he said at the time.
Most recently, Scarlett appeared as đť‘ eđť‘Ąy on-screen hero the Black Widow in the incredibly lucrative Marvel Avengers franchise.
And it seems as though that success is set to continue, with the actress getting a reported $15 million paycheck to reprise her role as the Black Widow in the character’s very own Marvel spin-off, which is due to premiere in 2010.
In fact, as well as celebrating her recent engagement, Scarlett also has another reason to raise a toast or two; her happy relationship news comes less than a year after she was named by Forbes as the highest-paid actress of the year.
Having landed a plum role in the Avengers movies, Scarlett earned an impressive $40.5 million between June 2017 and June 2018, putting her far ahead of Angelina Jolie, who placed second on the list with a comparatively meager $28 million.
Way back! Before she became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Scarlett, now 34, dated Fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff for two years in high school
First love: The two attended prom together at the Professional Children’s School on Manhattan’s Upper West Side but split after graduation
Ex alert: Scarlett and Jared (pictured at the 2018 Met Gala) dated for a year in 2004 and were spotted together again in 2012 (current partner Colin Jost is seen in the background left)
But will this relationship prove to be as successful as her on-screen career, and stand the test of time where others have not?
Either way, it certainly won’t be the first time that Scarlett’s romantic life has made headlines – far from it.
Even before she hit the big time, Scarlett’s love life had a celebrity element to it, her first known boyfriend in high school was none other than Fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff, 35.
The pair both attended the Professional Children’s School on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and dated for two years, even attending prom together in 2002.
‘When we were in high school, Jack was absolutely obsessed with her, and she broke his heart,’ a friend of the guitarist, who is Lena Dunham’s ex, told the New York Post.
‘They broke up shortly after graduation… She got swept up in the Hollywood scene.
She’d already had a few big-time gigs by then, too, in Home Alone 3, The Horse Whisperer, and The Man Who Wasn’t There.
Then, as her career took off, so too did rumors about her romantic life, with Scarlett later being linked to Jared Leto, now 47, in 2004. Neither party ever confirmed their relationship, but the pair were caught out together several times that year.
Reports say they then split after a year, though they were seen holding hands at the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
Beautiful people: She and heartthrob Josh Hartnett spent two years dating and had a ‘really painful’ breakup
Life v. art: Scarlett was rumored to have enjoyed a brief romance with Justin Timberlake in 2007 after they appeared in a music video for his song What Goes Around/Comes Around
Speaking to Cosmopolitan in 2016, ScarJo referenced a past relationship, and speculation at the time was that she was talking about Jared.
‘Long, long ago, I had someone in my life who was forever unavailable… but, like, so attractively unavailable,’ she said.
‘You have to get to your breaking point… rock bottom is the moment when you’re like, “I’ve lost myself. Why am I standing outside this bar at 1:30 in the morning texting while my friends are inside? Or taking a taxi to see him at some ungodly hour? This isn’t me.”
‘That is the moment you’ve gotta cut it off. Otherwise, it will keep coming back, suck your blood.’
One relationship that was confirmed however was her two-year romance with fellow actor Josh Hartnett. The former couple met on the set of Black Dahlia and reportedly dated from 2005 to 2007.
Later, 40-year-old Josh told the Mirror that their breakup was ‘really painful.’
‘It was difficult spending so much time apart with all our different commitments and both of us flying all over the world,’ he said. ‘At the end of the day, we’re just ordinary people and it didn’t work.’
Even as the pair were getting over their heartbreak, speculation surrounding the actress’s love life continued.
After breaking up with Josh, Scarlett is then said to have enjoyed a brief romance with popstar Justin Timberlake, now 38, after she appeared in the 2007 music video for his hit song What Goes Around/Comes Around.
Number one: ScarJo’s first husband was Ryan Reynolds, but the two called quits after two years of marriage
Whirlwind: Scarlett was linked with Sean for a few months in 2011
At the time, there were multiple reports that the pair’s very clear on-screen chemistry had translated to a real-life romance, however this was never addressed by either party.
The steamy scenes that they shared clearly hit home with viewers however, and the video was nominated for Video of the Year at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, while also taking home the prize for best direction.
In 2007, Scarlett began dating Ryan Reynolds, just two months after he split from singer Alanis Morisette, who he had been engaged to.
Just over a year later, Scarlett and Ryan, who is now 42 and married to blonde bombshell Blake Lively, revealed that they were engaged – and they tied the knot just four months after making the announcement.
However, by December 2010, they had called it quits.
‘We entered into our relationship with love, and it’s with love and kindness we leave it,’ they said in a statement at the time.
According to People, distance and their careers ‘played a big role’ in their decision to split.
While ScarJo told Vogue that their separation was ‘comically amicable,’ she also admitted that it was ‘horrible’.
‘Of course it’s horrible. It was devastating. It really throws you. You think that your life is going to be one way, and then, for various reasons or whatever, it doesn’t work out. … It’s like the loneliest thing you’ll ever do, in some way,’ she said.
She also noted at the time that she hadn’t given up on the idea of marriage, saying: ‘The falling in love and getting married and making that commitment.
‘I think it’s nice to know that you’re capable of loving somebody in that way. I think it’s a rare opportunity.’
A normal guy: She dated ad executive Nate, 45, for most of 2012 but broke up with him in October of that year
Quickie: She and French journalist Romain Dauriac were also married for two years and the couple shares a five-year-old daughter named Rose Dorothy
Not long after the break-up however, Scarlett was linked with another Hollywood A-lister: Sean Penn.
This odd couple was only together for a few months in 2011.
Scarlett and Sean, 58, were spotted together in public a few times, including at the White House Correspondents dinner together and in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
At the time of their split, a source told Us Weekly that ‘Scarlett pursued him’ but he didn’t want anything ‘serious’.
Having dated several big-name stars, Scarlett then moved away from the industry, finding love, albeit briefly, with ad executive Nate Naylor, 45, who she was first spotted with in the January of 2012, before they split in October.
‘It’s been a good time,’ she told Vogue while they were together. ‘I’ve had peace. Relative peace. I just want to work on things that are really hard, and when I’m not working on things that are really hard, I want to hang out with people I like to be with, and that’s it.’
She also said that having paparazzi trail them must have been ‘strange’ for him, but he’d been ‘remarkably good’ about it.
A few months after Scarlett split from Nate, she met French journalist Romain Dauriac, 37, and the pair began dating, announcing their engagement in 2014.
Speaking to Parade about her relationship at the time, the actress said: ‘We met through friends in Paris. It was very romantic. And we became friends. When I’d come back to Paris I would see him. We started dating.
‘He tells me that he learned English in one night! “I barely spoke English when we met,” he said. I don’t remember that at all. I felt like we were [always] talking the same language. Maybe it was the language of love.’
The one? Newly-engaged couple Scarlett and Colin have kept their relationship mostly private since getting together in 2017
Congrats! ScarJo’s publicist revealed that they recently got engaged
‘I love his brain more than anything,’ she added to People. ‘He does all the sweet gestures for me. He’s a gentleman.’
Together they welcomed daughter Rose Dorothy, now five, before getting married in 2014.
But after two years of marriage, they decided to split up. Interestingly, Scarlett hired divorce attorney Lauren Wasser, who had previously represented her ex Ryan during their divorce years before.
Scarlett’s next relationship however may well prove to be the one that lasts.
ScarJo’s publicist Marcel Pariseau told The Associated Press on Sunday that the actress and her SNL star beau Colin are officially engaged after two years of dating.
‘She’s wonderful,’ Colin told Entertainment Tonight in 2017. ‘She’s pretty cool… It’s hard to have a lot of complaints, she’s pretty awesome.’
They have kept their relationship fairly private since they first starting dating in July 2017, though they did walk the red carpet together at the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War in 2018.
‘She’s wonderful,’ Colin told Entertainment Tonight in 2017. ‘She’s pretty cool… It’s hard to have a lot of complaints, she’s pretty awesome.’
‘The first time she hosted was the first year I was a writer on the show. So, we’ve kind of known each other since then…she’s the best,’ he added.
