Matteo Romano was a name that made people tremble. As the leader of the Romano crime family, he had built his empire on loyalty, fear, and ruthless control. Nothing in his life had ever shaken him—not betrayals, not death, not even the people who tried to cross him. He lived with one rule: never let anyone get close enough to hurt you.
His mansion was the embodiment of his power—luxurious, imposing, and eerily silent. Even his closest associates knew better than to ask about his personal life. There were no attachments. There was no room for love, only business.
But one evening, as Matteo was finishing up an important meeting, his phone rang. The number on the screen was unknown, but the call was urgent.

“Mr. Romano,” the voice on the other end said, her voice shaking. “It’s Sofia, the maid. Please come home now. She’ll destroy her.”
Matteo’s heart skipped a beat. Sofia was one of the few people who worked in his mansion that he trusted, and her message sent an icy shiver down his spine.
“Who? Who’s going to destroy her?” Matteo demanded, his voice sharp.
Sofia’s voice wavered as she replied, “It’s Isabella… she’s at the house. Please, Mr. Romano, come home right now. I don’t know how much longer I can keep her away from—”
The call cut off abruptly. Matteo’s pulse quickened. He had not heard the name Isabella in years, and the last time he had seen her, she had been the love of his life.
But she was also the reason Matteo had locked his heart away for good. Isabella had left him in the past, vanishing without a trace, and he had spent years building a wall around himself to ensure no one could ever get close again.
Still, the urgency in Sofia’s voice rattled him, and he immediately ordered his driver to take him home.
When Matteo arrived at the mansion, the normally quiet, imposing estate felt eerily alive with tension. His men were standing guard outside, but the atmosphere inside was thick with a palpable fear.
He stormed through the grand entrance, his mind racing with questions. Isabella had been gone for so long—why was she back? And what did Sofia mean by “destroy her”?
As he reached the living room, the sight that met him stopped him dead in his tracks.
There, standing in the middle of the room, was Isabella. She was no longer the confident, carefree woman he had once loved. Her face was pale, her clothes disheveled, and her eyes were wild with fear.
She stood facing a woman Matteo had never seen before—a woman whose presence was as fierce as it was unsettling. The new woman, tall and intimidating, was glaring at Isabella with such intensity that it seemed as though she was willing to tear her apart right there.
“You think you can just waltz back into his life, Isabella?” the woman sneered. “You think Matteo will just forgive you for disappearing all these years?”
Matteo’s eyes flicked to Isabella. She was trembling, her hands shaking, but she didn’t respond.
“Enough!” Matteo’s voice rang through the room like thunder.
Both women froze, but the other woman didn’t back down. She met his gaze with a defiant smile.
“So the big mafia boss finally decides to show up,” she mocked. “I guess the princess thinks she can just walk back in and take everything she left behind.”
Matteo walked toward them, his eyes never leaving the woman who was now challenging him. He placed himself between Isabella and the stranger, his gaze cold.
“Who the hell are you?” he demanded, his voice laced with danger.
The woman didn’t flinch. “I’m the one who’s been protecting what’s mine, Romano.” Her eyes flashed with anger. “Isabella betrayed you once, and now she wants to come back, to take everything you’ve built. She doesn’t deserve you, or this life.”
Matteo’s jaw clenched as he turned to Isabella. “Is this true?” he asked, his voice betraying none of the emotions that had been building inside him.
Isabella’s voice trembled as she finally spoke. “I never wanted to leave, Matteo. I never meant to hurt you. But I was scared… I had to protect our son.”
Matteo’s eyes widened as he looked at Isabella, his mind racing. “Our son?” he repeated, barely believing his ears. “You had my child and you left?”
Isabella nodded, tears filling her eyes. “I couldn’t stay in that world anymore, Matteo. It was too dangerous… for him. For us.”

The stranger stepped forward, her face contorted in fury. “You had a family, Isabella! You left him behind and now you want to come back?”
Matteo turned to the woman, his voice cold and final. “Leave. Now.”
The woman’s eyes widened in shock, but she didn’t argue. She stepped back, giving Isabella one last scornful look before turning and storming out of the room.
Matteo turned back to Isabella, his face hard. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
Isabella’s voice broke as she stepped closer. “I thought you would hate me. I thought you would never forgive me.”
For a moment, Matteo said nothing. His heart, which had been locked away for so long, felt as if it were finally starting to thaw. “I’m not going to lie, Isabella. This… this hurts. But we have a son. And I will fight for him. For us.”
Tears flowed down Isabella’s face as she stepped into his arms, and for the first time in years, Matteo allowed himself to hold her. His empire, his power—none of it mattered as much as the family he had nearly lost.
