Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver continues to generate negative reception following its Apr. 19 release on Netflix. A new update details the declining viewership the Zack Snyder-helmed sequel has suffered since debuting on the streamer.

Per ComicBook.com, The Scargiver garnered 38 million viewing hours during its second week on Netflix (Apr. 22 – Apr. 28), down from the 44 million hours the film earned during the first week (Apr. 15 – Apr. 21), primarily in its first three days on the streamer. As a result, The Scargiver dropped from topping Netflix’s movie charts during its first week to 7th in the United States, trailing older films such as 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie and 2021’s King Richard.

The Scargiver’s viewership dip is compounded by the fact its peak viewership point to date is significantly lower than Part One: A Child of Fire, which attracted 54 million hours during its opening week on Netflix. Snyder previously said that the chances of a Rebel Moon threequel getting greenlit by Netflix depends on how well The Scargiver is received among audiences.

The Rebel Moon sequel boasts a star-studded cast, with Sofia Boutella portraying the main character, Kora, an ex-Imperium soldier who rallies warriors across the galaxy to fight against the oppressive Motherworld. The Scargiver also features Ed Skrein, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher, Anthony Hopkins and Doona Bae. The critical feedback for The Scargiver has been even more damning than the original, with the space opera follow-up attracting a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest ever for a Snyder film.

Snyder is set to release extended director’s cuts of A Child of Fire and The Scargiver, with the R-rated cuts containing major differences from the theatrical PG-13 versions, including new scenes and thematic changes. Snyder initially pitched her Rebel Moon movies as an R-rated Star Wars franchise to Lucasfilm before Disney took them over.

What Will Happen With the Rebel Moon Franchise?

Snyder plans to expand the Rebel Moon franchise in the coming years, including a video game, a comic book series and an animated short. The acclaimed director hopes to make as many as six Rebel Moon movies, with co-writer Kurt Johnstad revealing that the stories for each original installment of the planned film trilogy have been split into two parts.
