Leo XIV is once again making headlines — this time not for doctrine or diplomacy, but for footwear.
Sneaker enthusiasts recently spotted what appeared to be a pair of Nike sneakers peeking out beneath the pope’s traditional ivory robes in a trailer for the upcoming documentary Leone a Roma, a film exploring his years in Rome before becoming pope.
The now-viral image shows Pope Leo walking across a grassy area while wearing white low-top sneakers marked with a black Nike swoosh, creating an unexpected mix of papal tradition and modern streetwear culture.
According to sneaker outlet JustFreshKicks, the shoes closely resemble the Nike Franchise Low, a tennis-inspired model originally released in the 1970s and 1980s before being reissued in 2008.
A Pope With an Unexpected Personal Style
This is not the first time Pope Leo’s casual style choices have captured public attention.
In June 2025, the Chicago-born pontiff surprised many Catholics by appearing publicly in a Chicago White Sox baseball cap during a weekly audience at the Vatican.
The moment quickly went viral online, with the Chicago White Sox sharing the image on social media alongside the caption:
“Pope Leo XIV representing his favorite squad.”
The unexpected fashion statement also reignited debate surrounding the pope’s longtime sports loyalties after his election in May 2025.
It was later confirmed that the future pope, born Robert Francis Prevost and raised near Chicago’s South Side in Dolton, Illinois, had been a lifelong White Sox fan and even attended Game 1 of the 2005 World Series.
Tradition Meets Modern Culture
For centuries, papal clothing has symbolized tradition, authority, and continuity within the Catholic Church.
But Pope Leo XIV’s more approachable and contemporary style choices are resonating with many younger Catholics online, where photos of his sneakers and baseball cap have circulated widely across social media platforms.
While some traditionalists see the casual fashion moments as unusual for a pontiff, others view them as a sign of a pope comfortable bridging ancient religious tradition with modern everyday culture.
The Vatican itself has not officially commented on the sneakers, but the images have already sparked countless discussions online — proving once again that even papal footwear can become global news.
