Terrence Floyd, brother of George Floyd, spoke out about the controversy surrounding Kevin Hart’s Netflix roast, saying the comedian should have stepped in after Tony Hinchcliffe made a joke referencing his brother’s death.

In an interview on The Latest with Loren LoRosa, Terrence Floyd explained that the comment—Hinchcliffe’s line about George “looking up at us all, laughing so hard he can’t breathe”—was especially painful for the family. Hart had previously attended Floyd’s funeral in Minnesota, which Terrence says made the joke feel even more disrespectful.

“Kevin should’ve pulled a Will Smith, not by slapping him, but by bringing that same ‘screw you’ energy to cut him off,” Terrence told LoRosa. He also criticized Netflix and the show’s producers for airing the joke without intervention.

Floyd acknowledged the nature of comedy, understanding that roasts often involve crass humor, but said he doesn’t understand why his brother’s name was dragged back into the conversation. He also referenced a previous controversial joke Hinchcliffe made about George Floyd at The Roast of Tom Brady in 2024.

Terrence further condemned Shane Gillis’ comment about lynching Kevin Hart from a bonsai tree, calling it insensitive, though he noted Hart seemed to enjoy the moment.

The Floyd family has consistently criticized the Netflix roast. Travis Cains, spokesperson for The Gianna and George Floyd Foundation, described Kevin Hart’s failure to stop the joke as “sad for the culture,” emphasizing that the family sees the incident as a broader issue of respect and accountability in entertainment.

The remarks make it clear that Terrence Floyd and his family feel strongly that the roast crossed a line and that more should have been done to prevent it.
