Despite the conviction being overturned and a new trial ordered, Buster, who has largely remained out of the spotlight, continues to navigate the aftermath of the tragic events that rocked his family and community.
A Prominent Family Shattered
The Murdaughs were one of South Carolina’s most influential legal dynasties. The family law firm, Peters Murdaugh Parker Eltzroth & Detrick, was founded in 1910, and several generations of Murdaughs held significant legal and political power in the region. Buster and his younger brother Paul grew up in this environment, with Alex Murdaugh at the helm of the family’s fortune and influence.
Tragedy struck in June 2021, when Buster’s mother Maggie, 52, and brother Paul, 22, were shot to death at Moselle. Paul had been awaiting trial for his role in the 2019 boating death of 19-year-old Mallory Beach. Investigators quickly focused on Alex Murdaugh, who would later face nearly 90 criminal charges ranging from embezzlement to drug distribution, culminating in his indictment for the murders of Maggie and Paul.
Throughout his father’s trial in 2023, Buster stood by Alex, testifying in his defense and maintaining that his father was innocent. “I do not think that he could be affiliated with endangering my mother and brother,” Buster told Fox Nation. He added that the trial was unfair and influenced by extensive pretrial publicity.
Although Buster was never charged in connection with the murders or any other criminal acts, he has faced his own legal and personal challenges. He was named in the 2019 wrongful death lawsuit filed by Mallory Beach’s family, alongside Alex and Maggie. That lawsuit was settled in January 2023 for a substantial but undisclosed sum.
Buster’s name also came up during investigations into the 2015 death of Stephen Smith, a 19-year-old nursing student who was found dead near the Murdaugh family estate. Authorities have never charged or questioned Buster regarding the case, and he has publicly denied any involvement.
Since the deaths of his mother and brother, Buster has largely withdrawn from public life, avoiding Moselle and his hometown of Hampton. He moved first to Hilton Head Island with then-girlfriend, now wife, Brooklynn White, and later purchased a home in Bluffton, South Carolina. White, an attorney, works in Charleston, and the couple married in May 2025.
Buster has not returned to law school, despite his father reportedly paying $60,000 to help him re-enroll. His current employment status remains unknown. Close sources note that he has built a tight circle of friends and prefers to keep his private life out of the public eye.
With Alex Murdaugh’s double-murder conviction overturned, the family saga continues to unfold. Buster has not attended the May 2026 proceedings but remains closely connected to the situation. He continues to assert that he believes his father is innocent while maintaining a cautious approach to life outside the public spotlight.
“He really withdrew after everything happened,” a former college classmate said. “He has really closed off and built walls around himself.”
For now, Buster Murdaugh’s life is defined by quiet resilience and the ongoing shadow of a family legacy that went from revered to notorious almost overnight.
