Battle rap veteran Tsu Surf has officially been released from custody after serving more than three years connected to federal conspiracy and firearms-related convictions.
According to records from the Michigan Department of Corrections obtained by AllHipHop, the New Jersey rapper — born Rahjon Cox — was granted parole and released on April 15, bringing an end to a complicated legal situation that stretched across both federal and state jurisdictions.
Tsu Surf was initially arrested in October 2022 as part of a federal investigation involving racketeering conspiracy and illegal firearm possession. Prosecutors alleged that Cox was tied to criminal activity connected to a broader investigation targeting members of the Rollin’ 60s Neighborhood Crips in New Jersey.
In April 2023, Cox pleaded guilty to two federal charges: racketeering conspiracy and possession of firearms and ammunition by a convicted felon. The plea agreement led to a prison sentence that sidelined one of battle rap’s most recognizable personalities at the height of his popularity.
Although he completed the federal portion of his sentence earlier this year and was released from federal custody in February, his legal troubles were not fully resolved at that point. Authorities transferred him to Michigan to address a separate unresolved firearm-related case dating back to 2011, extending his incarceration for several additional months.
Michigan parole officials ultimately approved his release this week, officially closing out the remaining case and ending his time in custody.
At the time of publication, Tsu Surf had not publicly commented on his release or outlined any future plans.
Before his arrest, Tsu Surf was widely considered one of the most influential and respected figures in modern battle rap. Known for his sharp delivery, storytelling ability, and commanding stage presence, he became a major star through appearances on the Ultimate Rap League (URL) platform and other high-profile battle rap events.
Beyond battle rap, Surf also built a successful music career and developed a dedicated fanbase that followed both his battles and commercial releases. His legal issues in 2022 shocked many fans, especially as he was experiencing renewed momentum musically and professionally before his arrest.
