Long before Prince William and Princess Kate became the future King and Queen of Britain, their love story almost never happened at all.
A new royal book has revealed that during one of the most uncertain moments of William’s life, it was King Charles who quietly stepped in with crucial “fatherly” advice — advice that would ultimately change the future of the monarchy forever.
According to royal author Robert Lacey in his book Battle of Brothers, Prince William seriously considered leaving the University of St Andrews during his first year after struggling to adapt to student life in the quiet Scottish town.
At the time, the young prince reportedly felt isolated, overwhelmed, and deeply unhappy. Despite the excitement surrounding his arrival at the prestigious university, William quickly found himself uncomfortable with the intense attention he attracted everywhere he went.

Adding to the pressure, William was also said to be unhappy with his chosen course, History of Art, and frequently traveled home on weekends to seek comfort from family. Eventually, things became so difficult that he considered dropping out altogether and transferring to another university.
And that is where King Charles played a role far more important than anyone could have imagined.
Royal aides reportedly warned Charles that allowing William to leave St Andrews would create a damaging public relations disaster, potentially making the future king appear weak or unable to handle pressure. But beyond concerns about royal image, Charles also recognized something deeply personal in his son’s struggles — because he himself had experienced similar feelings while growing up under royal expectations.
According to reports, Charles sat down with William for a serious heart-to-heart conversation, encouraging him not to give up during a difficult moment of transition.
William later admitted that his “wobble” came from feeling overwhelmed rather than homesick.
“My father was very understanding about it,” William reportedly said. “We chatted a lot, and in the end we both realised that I had to come back.”
