Nearly six years after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped away from royal life, new revelations are shedding light on how Princess Kate privately viewed the growing divide between Prince William and his younger brother — and why she may have believed the heartbreaking fallout was unavoidable from the very beginning.
According to royal author Russell Myers in his biography William & Catherine, the Princess of Wales allegedly saw a deeper issue at the heart of the brothers’ strained relationship: the lifelong divide between the “heir” and the “spare.”
While Prince William was born with a clearly defined destiny as the future King of Britain, Prince Harry reportedly spent much of his life struggling to understand his place within the institution. And according to the book, Kate came to believe those “fundamental differences” between the brothers made Harry’s eventual departure from royal duties almost inevitable.
“As an outsider, Catherine had witnessed the deterioration of William and Harry’s relationship,” Myers writes. Sources quoted in the biography claim Kate had “less interest” than William in trying to persuade Harry to remain a working royal because she believed his unhappiness within the system ran much deeper than any temporary conflict.
The biography suggests Kate quietly understood that Harry wanted more than simply playing a supporting role within the monarchy — something the royal structure itself may never have allowed.
The emotional dynamic surrounding the “heir and spare” system has become one of the defining themes of Prince Harry’s public life. In interviews, documentaries, and especially in his memoir Spare, Harry openly described the pain, pressure, and emotional isolation he experienced growing up as the younger brother of the future King.
In a 2023 interview, Harry even expressed concern for Prince William and Kate’s own children — particularly Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis — fearing they could one day experience the same emotional struggles he endured.
“Out of those three children, at least one will end up like me, the spare,” Harry said. “And that hurts, that worries me.”

One former senior courtier reportedly explained that while the first-born heir is raised with a clear purpose and path, younger siblings are often left searching for identity, relevance, and independence within an institution built around hierarchy.
